Turkey Talk for 2014

I have trouble seeing in turkey eggs until about day 14. Don't give up too early.

thanks for the encouragement

the only two I broke open and inspected still had detached air cells after 4 days incubation. I'm at least absolutely sure what detached air cell is

Got 15 possible good turkey eggs still. I'll look next week then because right now its just frustrating lol. The 3 little Ameracuana eggs are cooking along looking tho.. that was neat see!! Today I'm starting the other incubator with a mix of eggs, La Bresse, Silkies (OMG IKR SILKIES!) and Auburn Java.

$3 a dozen! That's less than free range chicken eggs sold for eating. If you're not concerned about NPIP certification and aren't breeding purebreds, that's cheap enough to buy them, crack a few in a frying pan to check for fertility, and either eat or incubate the rest, depending on your fertility check (assuming that they haven't been stored in the refrigerator prior to sale). That's more than a fair price for infertile turkey eggs.

yes it is! I agree. I just got a chuckle the way the ad was worded. Wondered if they ever cracked one open. I called him, little amish man it sounds like, he says the birds are a year old now..he doesnt know if they have had date night yet...

I'm gonna get a dozen tomorrow and we'll see.

He said he doesn't know what they look like fertile.. I'll go see and meet a new friend.

Sounds like a very smart plan! What do they test eggs for? or do you mean the babies after? I'm pretty leary about taking live birds from someone.

If I hatch some eggs I keep the babies separate till they are 3 months old for my NPIP agent to come test the birds for anything. If the person I got the eggs from is NPIP I still watch the chicks for anything out of the ordinary. My NPIP guy comes every 3 months anyways to test for the AI flu so if I have any birds in quarantine he tests them for me then also.
You just need to be very careful so you don't get your birds sick.

Well thank you for telling me this. I did not realize some things can be carried thru the egg? I plan on doing NPIP too when I actually have more than eggs...I better start learning about it! Yep I'll be extremely careful with best practices. I've been gathering hatching eggs from some good stock I don't wanna lose it.
I'm literally a "egg farmer" at this point LOL .

You are very welcome. You can google NPIP for your state and you can read about it and the requirements for your state. Every state is different.
Egg farmer's are great around here! I love eggs!

What kind of turkeys is your pair?

mine are bronze

so far i'm happy with me hen

it's still really cold here (5f some nights)

but she is laying almost every day

i need to add a couple more to their small flock

do non-wild turkeys tend to go broody?

thanks
piglett

Yes even domestic turkeys go broody. Just ask kuntrygirl lol her farm is like a never ending baby making factory lol .

Both my hens went broody last year but weren't successful at hatching, which was fine I really didn't want them to raise any poults. Im not set up for a separate turkey hen broody area to keep the poults safe. So I collect every egg they lay.
