Turkey Talk for 2014

The turkeys are fertile! Everything laid since the 22nd is developing. I have slates & slate/palm crosses right now. I lost my palm tom last night to a sparring injury from the slate tom that I didn't catch in time.

I had let my ex come back briefly to give him 1 last chance. He was supposed to be taking care of the birds. I noticed my palm tom acting lethargic & asked JJ to check him over. He lied & said he did then told me Henry was fine. My daughter came in screaming yesterday morning that we had a dead turkey. He wasn't yet & I tried to save him but he didn't make it through the night.

On top of that, he totaled my car yesterday & then copped an attitude with me & my daughter both this morning. He found himself with a 40+ mile walk to his nearest relative this morning.

My gosh Silkie, you've had to deal with a lot of challenges lately. I'm so sorry. It sounds like you've gotten rid of one major complication in your life.

What did your toms do to each other that was fatal? So far mine have only had minor skirmishes, but every time I hear of one dying I'm worried that I should intervene before things get out of hand. They've had one fight that lasted for about 10 hours over 2 days, and a few that have lasted more than 4 hours each, but nothing that caused anything more than scratches and bruises around the head, a mild limp that lasted for one day only, and major exhaustion the next day. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

. I'm gonna say your ex most probably learned nothing from it.
It sounds like you did though. I'm so sorry about he was a butthead and sorry about your Tom.

Feather question: my Tom's Tail feathers are not pretty. He lived with to many boys before I bought him and they all looked pretty ratty. He is young about 6 months. Will the feathers eventually grow back so he has a full fan to display? He is otherwise gorgeous and sweet. Lavender palm from porter's.

He had a large torn patch of skin across the back of his hip under the edge of the wing. It would have been obvious if JJ had even bothered to look him over. I found it within seconds. I think Benny was also keeping Henry from the food bowls. He had lost an exceptional amount of weight in a week's time.

Thanks. I have been supporting him for over a year. He had told our roommate Monday that if his SSI had already gone through he would have already left me. I had a feeling that's what he was up to so that was just the icing on the cake.

Since he's so young, he may molt when weather warms up but likely he will wait until late summer at the end of breeding season. Any broken feathers will fall out then & regrow. Missing feathers should grow back in within a week or 2 as long as he has plenty of protien. You could pluck broken feathers a few at a time to give the effect of a gradual molt to get him looking pretty again sooner. Just make sure to give him some tuna, fish or other shredded meat to boost protien a little while you do it.

Silkie, I am sorry for the loss of your turkey. :hugs  You will probably be much better off with your ex as an ex again it sounds like.

And my birds will be better off as well because they will be taken care of properly. I can attribute nearly every loss of a bird over 8 weeks old to something he DIDN'T DO that he swore he did until I started finding dead birds & caught him in the lie. Usually it was failing to feed & water daily & he starved or dehydrated my birds.

You all will be much better off.

I have a royal Palm Tom and a lavender hen. I'm wanting to get a 2nd hen, preferably royal palm, but that isn't looking promising. So I was thinking a white would make pretty babies with him. I know he is supposed to be smaller than some breeds, so I've been wondering if a Midget White would be too small for him?

Palms are right between the size of slates (lavender is a double slate gene) & midget whites. He should be ok with both hens.
