Wouldn't coyote urine attract other coyotes? I lost birds last summer to coyotes. I sure don't want to attract them. What if I let my dog hike his leg on the posts? He'd be more than happy to.

Could you possibly cover your run so that the wild turkey cannot get into it to fight your tom? I have my runs covered with 2x4 welded wire and some use poultry netting. I have to keep out alot of predators.

My BBW hen was 30+ pounds live weight. She DID NOT fit in a 5 gal bucket for dunking & barely fit enough to carry her back outside without soaking the house on the way. A tom her age would have never fit at all.

Mine dressed out this year betwn 19 and 32 pounds. They would not even come close to fitting in a bucket.

I just did an 8-month old heritage tom, he fit. Though we never get around to weighing them. I don't recall if we were using the bucket last year for BBW, but I don't know what else we have that we would have used (thinking about it, we do have a 15 gallon stock bucket, hmm). We do process them a tad younger and smaller--we just don't need such a large bird (which is part of the reason we opted to go for the heritage birds).

I got mine from Spyder.

I got the Herpstat 1 basic because I wanted a grounded unit.  The Herpstat Intro or the Intro + is sufficient since the old GQFs are not grounded units and only have 2 pronged plugs.

You have to remove the electronic controller and replace it with the digital controller.  The other thing that I did is to separate the heating circuit from the fan circuit and because mine is an incubator I also separated the tray turning circuit.  I ran an electric cord from the heating element and secondary high temp controller (set at 102°F, wafer and snap switch) through the incubator wall in order to plug it into the Spyder controller.

The cheap PID controllers is reviewed here:

Sorry I can't help you with that one but many others can.  As far as the Spyder goes, I could take pictures of my set up after this group of eggs is done.  Unfortunately that won't be until sometime after Apr. 23.

Good luck.

I am going yon order the spider controller. I'll have to look at my hatching schedule to figure out when I can put it on. I am currently hatching turkey, coturnix quail and chicken eggs for the next 10 days. Thanks for all the help and I would love a pic when you can get one. My husband is handy with electrical stuff so I'm sure we can figure it out.

I purchased a turkey hen last fall, then a tom just before spring, cause she started laying and I couldn't resist! I'm so nervous and excited at the same time. I can't wait to hear and see baby turkeys for the 1st time ever!! They are a mix of my blue slate hen and my RP tom, so who knows what they will look like. lol

Blue slate crossed with royal palm will produce mostly black poults and a few of two different variants of blues that as they mature will develop mottling with white feathers scattered throughout. My understanding that breeding back the mottled blues to the royal palm can produce blue palms. That is also one of the expected outcomes from crossing the mottled blue poults with each other.
