I don't ship at all. I do this only as a hobby. Occasionally someone local asks for eggs or chicks/poults, and rarely an adult bird. and I will sell locally only if I know that the birds will be given a good long term home or be slaughtered humanely. So a bit more of a pet attitude than a livestock attitude regarding distribution. But that's just me -- just what I'm comfortable with doing. Not saying that's what everyone else should do.

I found this on the American Buckeye Assoc. Facebook page and I have been reading it, it has some very good old time info on raising turkey and caring for the poults. I thought it might be interesting to some. The Turkey section starts on page 881

I now have 3 Blue Slate Turkeys hatched out. They weren't due to hatch until tomorrow. Now I am glad I took the turner out and locked them down early on Sunday night.


Now to decide if I wait out the hatch or if I pull the hatchlings as they dry off. If I wait until i am sure the hatch is over will the babies make it. If I pull do I pull the empty shells too. Humidity jumped to 80 - 85% at they hatch out. then drops back to 70 - 75% after a bit.

Wait it out. The poults are fine for at least a day or 2, so for the sake of the others that are pipped, let them in there. I try to only open the incubator when there are no eggs pipped. I said "try" because I sometimes can't help myself, but the better I stick to that rule, the better my hatches are.

Varies State to State but $10-12 for a day old heritage poult is a reasonable price. Some people charge $8, but I think $10-12 is a good price range.

Are these your turkeys and your selling the poults, or are you looking to buy poults and these are the parent stock?

I agree. $20 for a day old poult is too much, in my opinion. I wouldn't pay that.
