Turkey Talk for 2014

Agreed.. I have raised my Poults with my chickens and have not had the above problem (Blackhead) for anyone thinking of combining the two birds its best to check with your extension office first and see if there is blackhead in your area, I also talked to folks at all the feed stores within 30 miles and confirmed they had never heard of it around here... I hatch them together and raise them together.

AmericanMom that is a very nice looking bunch you have!

Thank You!! I am so happy with how this all turned out this year, the oldest in that picture is around 10 weeks and the youngest is 7-8 weeks..
Finally got my Broody Turkey, she is sitting on 18.. I'll candle around the end of this week if I have a chance (she never gets off the nest when I'm around lol) Working at getting Turkey #2 to go broody... Caught her this morning checking out the nest of the first broody turkey... She is the one that has only ever laid in the coops Yesterday I fixed her up this in hopes I can entice her to use it instead of the nesting boxes . Its one of the Rabbit hutches I wasn't using, I screwed a board onto the front to make the opening smaller and give her some privacy (should she accept it) and laid it where the door was on the top so I could remove/add eggs easily.. I added a few fake eggs to show her how nice it is to lol..

That is a nice nest she will likely take the bait. :)

I did not do anything to entice my girls except I stopped collecting their eggs. They had 10 last week and I marked them and the other day they had already added 4 more.

Yah, with the first hen that's all I did was stop collecting and added a few more from the second hen... The second hen lays in the nesting boxes often kicking out a chicken hen to get her spot and eggs, its not uncommon for eggs to get broken in the process, I set this up in hopes she will take to it and leave the nesting boxes alone

So I was speaking to someone the other day and was told I gave the broody turkey too many eggs that she will not be able to cover them and because of the amount she has they all will probably not develop... Now I have read a lot and 18 although does seem a tad much like I said, I plan to candle if I can later this week and remove non starters or quitters.. But is this person right? I thought the hen decided how many was enough?

Oh sorry I misunderstood. I have a hen that went broody well she had 4 chicks hatch and two had spraddle legs so she abandoned them and the rest of the eggs. I brought the chicks in and taped their legs and the chicks hatched. So I took them back out to her today and rubbed each of them on her so she could not tell which was which and I even added a poult to her brood and she is taking care of all of them. She is a first time momma so she has no idea how it is suppose to work. And I lucked out, and turned off the heat lamp to the brooder! :celebrate Can you see the Bourbon Red poult near the back.
Hi sorry to be a bit of a buzzkill but you can't keep baby chicks with poults as I lost my last hatching coz of having them with baby chicks it is fomenting in the poo that causes the turkeys to get warts on there eyes and they suffocate to death from the warts it is a sad and looks to be a painful procedure just want to tell you before it is to late looks similar to the pic but the bird is not mine I had young poults but anyone congrats on your hatch of chicks.
I raise all ppults with chicks & pen all adult turkeys with chickens. No illnesses, no issues. If you do not have blackhead in your area it is not a problem.

I know for a fact that the state of California has *no* idea what "areas" have blackhead, and I bet that's the same with most states. Best to assume that you do have it and have the necessary medications to treat it.

The feed stores in my area won't have a clue about blackhead, and I'd bet the same is true for the extension offices. Sure, call the feed store, extension offices, but then call an avian pathologist in your State and ask them if what they think.

Think about this... how many of you send *all* dead chicks, chickens, poults, turkeys, etc off for necropsy or do them yourselves? Then think about your neighbors, what do they do with theirs? How can agency possibly know what diseases are in what parts of your town, county or State?
