Turkeys Dying

Sorry, I can't help you out with either of those questions, for the reasons stated, it's a bit of a nebulous problem and there's insufficient resources or information to tackle it. May take some digging around to find something like Gamebird feeds (generally great for turkeys) and since fish zole is not intended for turkeys there won't be official guidelines on withdrawal times.

Best wishes.

Sorry to hear about your Bourbon!!!

I have 3- 5 1/2 month old BR's.. One male and two females. One of the females kept getting sick, every few weeks she would become lethargic, stand around and her poo was a nasty yellow , I was desperate as I hade already lost several over the past three months and these were the last of a hatch of 12... I called a vet, my local extension office and talked to people at our local feed stores and they all said the same thing, no blackhead in our area. We had raised these three with our large flock of chickens so to be better safe than sorry we separated them into their own coop and large run. I then did some research, I don't like to medicate our animals if at all possible and found a wonderful site and people who were able to answer my questions and give me the help I needed as I wasn't getting any help here.. I was told about the Cayenne pepper and organic AVC but then someone told me the hatcheries add Oregano oil to the feed for their turkeys, I was instructed to put 10 drops in 1/4-1/2 cup oil and mix it into their feed every day, I was also told to add a couple TBSP of the pepper. I didn't have much hope at the time but it has now been about 3-4 weeks and our hen is completely clear of all symptoms!! Her poo is indistinguishable from the other two, she has gained some weight and filled out and is just as active as they are.. I was also told that once she clears up to back off on the pepper and Oil and only give it to them one week out of each month so their bodies build a natural defense.

I don't know for sure what she had, whether it was blackhead or some other parasite but I do know that today I have three healthy turkeys because of the treatment I gave.

Blackhead and some other diseases have similar symptoms as well as treatments, at the end of the day the actual disease being identified is often less important than finding what treats it.

I did have one very, very susceptible hen I hatched out during my resistance breeding program (she had a completely immune full brother, go figure) and this hen relapsed so many times that eventually enough was enough. Ongoing cecal infection, or secondary infection, best as I can guess, didn't bother doing an autopsy even though normally I do.

Sounds like you've done well to have recovered your relapsing or chronically symptomatic hen, once it's become long term and ongoing there's always a lowered chance of success.

It's important to distinguish between conventional and 'alternative' (natural or original) therapies/treatments/medicines; I also don't like to use conventional ones, but natural ones instead, and they allow natural immunity to build up whereas most artificial or conventional ones prevent it.

What was that site you went to for info?

Best wishes.

I also thought if she relapses again we might have to cull her, I hate to do it but I don't want to use her for breeding if this continues.. ...so far she is doing great so fingers crossed her immune system just needed a slight boost. I think the Oregano oil was the trick but it could have been a combination of all three.. I give AVC in one of the waterers but just plain in the other so they have free choice.
I am part of a homesteaders group on FB and that's where I got the information, people who join are from our area so I felt comfortable with that, out of over 50 responses only one suggested blackhead. Everyone agreed on the above treatment so I was comfortable with it and one of the responders was a herbalist who let me know I wasn't giving enough Cayenne.. I would suggest anyone who hooks up with FB to search your local homesteaders FB pages.

I found a Facebook page and they told me to treat with the fishzole but not to cull for 5 weeks.... Then our local school said absolutely do not eat after treating with it....
I'm SOOOO confused
