I have 3- 5 1/2 month old BR's.. One male and two females. One of the females kept getting sick, every few weeks she would become lethargic, stand around and her poo was a nasty yellow , I was desperate as I hade already lost several over the past three months and these were the last of a hatch of 12... I called a vet, my local extension office and talked to people at our local feed stores and they all said the same thing, no blackhead in our area. We had raised these three with our large flock of chickens so to be better safe than sorry we separated them into their own coop and large run. I then did some research, I don't like to medicate our animals if at all possible and found a wonderful site and people who were able to answer my questions and give me the help I needed as I wasn't getting any help here.. I was told about the Cayenne pepper and organic AVC but then someone told me the hatcheries add Oregano oil to the feed for their turkeys, I was instructed to put 10 drops in 1/4-1/2 cup oil and mix it into their feed every day, I was also told to add a couple TBSP of the pepper. I didn't have much hope at the time but it has now been about 3-4 weeks and our hen is completely clear of all symptoms!! Her poo is indistinguishable from the other two, she has gained some weight and filled out and is just as active as they are.. I was also told that once she clears up to back off on the pepper and Oil and only give it to them one week out of each month so their bodies build a natural defense.
I don't know for sure what she had, whether it was blackhead or some other parasite but I do know that today I have three healthy turkeys because of the treatment I gave.
