Turkeys Dying

It is hard to find any local farms that are raising turkeys. There is stock market that people often sell poultry but you still not sure if you are getting a healthy bird. If were to purchase any it would have to be farms out side my area but again you are still gambling that bird is also healthy so what is a person to do?

All a person can do is educate themselves, which is a never-ending task, and keep trying. It doesn't matter where you get your birds, nobody has 100% perfect stock. There will always be something. Sooner or later disease free flocks catch disease, mutations crop up, etc... You just have to keep trying.

Best wishes.

Oh I am so sorry I know it is heart breaking. You do get attached to these guys. I lost the first three I started raising only to loose them at 6 weeks old. I found out it was Black head disease. I am raising one now which he has passed six weeks he is ten weeks. I think because I am keeping him away from my chickens.

The causes of blackhead transmission are several and it can strike at any time with or without chickens being in contact with the turkey. I assume you know this but thought to mention it just in case. Even if he never comes into contact with chooks, for one example, the earthworms can carry infected oocysts from the chicken's pen into the turkey's area... After rainfall is when blackhead tends to break out in many cases.

Best wishes. Good luck with this one.

As of right now I am keeping him in doors. I hoping to keep him there until spring in which between now and then I am going to build pen either off the ground or fix up a concrete pad to prevent any worms from getting up in the pen

Good luck with that, worth mentioning that you can breed for blackhead resistance, but it does of course take generations of work and only breeding the survivors. If you want them for pets or a commercial enterprise, probably best to just focus on prevention.

Best wishes.

I need all the luck I can get I am just now starting raising turkeys. I agree it would be years of hard work with trail and error. As of right now the one I got seems to very healthy and I am planning on keeping that way if I can help it
