Turkeys For 2013

Thanks.. Can improper humidity cause this...
A blood ring is caused when the develping embryo has made enough blood vessels that when it dies the ring appears. Embryos can die earlier and later, and give a different appearence to the blood ring, or no apparent blood ring if it dies much later.

Many causes of death to an embryo, but humidity itself is not one I would think of.

Lack of ventilation
dropped or rough handling
spike in heat or quick change in temp

I'm sure other things also play a part, but these are the most likely IMO.

It happens occassionally to me too, probably to all of us. As I learned how to handle the eggs with slow methodical handling, no dropping or bumping, and slow turning, I have fewer blood rings. But like I said it happens.

How are the other eggs doing??

Updated pics on 3 1/2 month old poults that hatched. Some of these are the turkey eggs that I had refrigerated for 2 weeks. This group is from the first turkey eggs that were layed this year.

The area where they walk has sand on the ground and other dirt that was brought in. This is why I allow them to free range because they are walking on sand.

okay, I have a question. Does your guy's turkey hens, well, pull at your tom's beards? It's my hens favorite hobby. They'll lay beside each other and she'll just pluck away at his stubby, baby beard. Is she somehow helping it grow out of his skin? Is there some sort of attraction to beards with hens? Or is my hen just OCD and bothers the tom? He actually doesn't seem to mind it. It seems to actually excite him somewhat, he'll toss his head to the side with his snood all droopy and his tail fanned and just let her have at his beard. It's a bit strange

that explains it. My jakes got into a fight and crashed the nest. A couple were broken so I took the other ones inside. But they got a good beating. Mist be why I got so many than... :( I will keep throng though. I guess not all blood rings mean dead embryo.

ETA Can you tell me what sex they are yet? I can't tell, all they do is follow me around and chirp. I have to watch where I step so I don't step on a turkey.
Watch for differences in size and weight. Males will start getting taller, larger and heavier at a couple of months(sometimes, but not always)! Also at about 3 months, hens will start getting a thin line of feathers going up the back of their heads and toms will stay bald ! They are Cuties !!

I guess it hatched ok, I came home from work and there it was, so ugly it's cute. I have no idea why it has no feathers, it does have some on the body though.

Maybe premature BALDING ? LOL

My turkeys peck at everything ! LOL
She has been jailed every day since ID'd-- penned by herself. No more eggs broken. Not sure why she is doing this. Plenty of layer pellets, crushed egg shells added, free ranging with some grass still available. Has me stumped. Broken eggs are an annoying mess--

Yes they are, and when I don't pick eggs every couple of hours, one will eventually get stepped on and broken. My girls all want the same nests, don't matter which one, they want to lay where others have laid eggs already. 4 or 5 to a nest at a time, and sooner or later, an egg will get broken!

Even my turkey hens will lay 4 to a nest at the same time, except for my old Mama turkey hen. It is her 3rd year of laying and she will not allow any other hen in her nest while she is laying her egg! She is Alpha Hen and she makes sure everyone knows it! LOL
