Quote: that explains it. My jakes got into a fight and crashed the nest. A couple were broken so I took the other ones inside. But they got a good beating. Mist be why I got so many than...I will keep throng though. I guess not all blood rings mean dead embryo.![]()
CHeck in another week to see if development has continued.![]()
Thank you. I saw the smallest one doing the little dance yesterday. Which leads me to believe they are all males. It's also the only one whose little thing on it's forehead is getting bigger. I don't know. We were going to keep 1 female but if they are all males then I guess I will have an extra bird to give away.Watch for differences in size and weight. Males will start getting taller, larger and heavier at a couple of months(sometimes, but not always)! Also at about 3 months, hens will start getting a thin line of feathers going up the back of their heads and toms will stay bald ! They are Cuties !!![]()
if the little dance include drooping wings and lots of stomping its how a jake or tom breeds. If you turkey has a hat and cane and wares a striped shirt, congratulations! Your turkey is the first to ever star on a show tune. The little flabby thing on there heads is called a snood. Along with the warty stuff on their necks( caruncle) it will turn red when the bird is excited. His cheeks will turn blue and the snood will also grow. Oh and that waddle on his neck... It's called a dewlap I believe. Enjoy your birds...Watch for differences in size and weight. Males will start getting taller, larger and heavier at a couple of months(sometimes, but not always)! My DH and I were wondering if other turkey breeds were as friendly as the bbb. If so we would be looking for a trio of them fairly soon, that way we can get attached to the ones we are keeping not the eating ones.

My turkey hens seem just fine nesting on the ground in the corner of their coop. I have a pallet and piece of plywood leaned in the corner to make it more private. They seem just fine with that set up.Do turkeys( hens) like there nesting box on the ground or in like a "book shelf" nesting box

I found more Bourbon Reds. I have 5 more coming around the 25th. With the 6 I have now I'll be able to build an unrelated Trio. I'll be raising my own in the future. After a disappointing experience with some mail order Red Bourbon hatching eggs (all infertile) I found 6 poults on Craigslist and bought them all.![]()
