There is something called Blackhead that is fatal to turkeys. I called my agriculture department in our county offices to inquire about it.

I'm told it is in the soil. Try googling turkeys and Blackhead. sue

I remember now, It's caused by a cecal worm. Google has a lot of info.

Excuse me if I am wrong but I believe what redneck farmer is saying is that he is not keeping his poultry on soil but rather his poultry "live on DE like stuff" and is asking if blackhead will be a problem if he adds turkeys to his coop since his poultry are not being raised on the dirt.

I don't know the answer to that and would recommend that redneck farmer contact his local county conservation agent (at least that is what they are called where I live).

OK, so if the turkeys are not on the soil, they couldn't eat the worm that causes Blackhead. If you will google turkeys and Blackhead, there is a lot of information out there. My very first sentence said I would get into trouble by responding. The end.

hmmmm... I am told its in the poop... if they eat the chicken poop and they do when together, that is how it is gotten and that came from my ag office also lol

black head- chickens- turkeys Need the three factors to get the turkeys infected. My understanding is MAss doesn't really have black head HOWEVER, Conn state vet recommended NOT housing the two together. I think it is an arrange ment that requires some investigation, decide what your risk levels are and make a decision how to manage the turkeys.


Gender-- very difficult to sex the turkeys unless you have a breed that is a sex link color. I had folks tell me look at the thickness of the legs, feel for the bristles on the chest, and so many other ways too.

I am wondering what you think on, I am gonna raise some freedom rangers, 70 day butcher plan... than spray down the area the best i can with a hose and maybe some disinfectiant that I see at Meyers, and than put my 2nd batch of turkeys in there about a week after I clean that area out... Would you think with time inbetween and water on that area to dilute the area at the least I would not have a worry of the blackhead?

Well, I think I will buy some black or bronze turkeys to raise for the table,I have raised a lot of turkeys in the past so I know they eat a lot,do thats why I am getting bronze or blacks,cuz they are very good foragers and the feed imput will be smaller.
