Turkeys For 2013

I think it was the opposite. I have had hens get very frustrated with a tom who couldn't or wouldn't breed them. If she was squatting for the tom, she wanted to be bred. I had an older tom, who for whatever reason, would not breed his hens. After repeatedly squatting, getting up and following the tom, squatting by him again, with no action on his part, she grabbed his snood and dragged him all over the pen. You could just see her frustration! It takes the younger toms a while to "get with the program". They are usually uncoordinated at first.

This was the first time I observed them. Shes been crazy for about the last week or so. Which is why I moved them. She hurt a hen, while chasing the tom. The hen got in her way. Maybe she is just frustrated lol. Poor gal.

Thanks everyone for the tips! going to do the tylan injectable. I am working on NPIP as well, so once I can finally get a "tester" here to test, I can get some answers.
I try to not think the worst, and get worked up over minor symptoms, there is such a broad range of diseases that a sneeze matches!
But I do want to start treating right away, any time a bird won't eat, i go into panic mode.
Especially with all the crop dust flying around, and my sneezing is worse than theirs

There is several unplanted fields around us this year chock full of goldenrod and ragweed, ugh!
The fields mostly belong to Con Agra foods.
I'm sending good vibes its just the fields. We have that here right now. Drives me crazy, anyway hope all starts feeling better soon!

Thank you! The did belong to my neighbor, they were scheduled for slaughter with the rest of the bunch 2 weeks ago. My neighbor said 2 were mine anyway, it didn't matter to him if I wanted them to live or die. But if they live, we can eat next year lol.

They were fed starter feed for one bag, then cracked corn. Plus veggies and fruits and grazing. They have it very good now lol. So I almost can't wait for molt so they get rid of all the nasty cut feathers. I've had them for about 4 months now. Normally no problems. Weird time for them I guess

Turkeys should be fed more protein then corn has. They need at least 28% protein feed! It's OK to finish hogs with corn, but will only put extra fat on turkeys, not meat!

I agree, they are currently off the cracked corn (and have been since I got them), and getting FF made of nutrena all flock, a small amount of 7 grain scratch and boss. He's from el salvador, and thats how they did turkeys there. They are doing much better now than they were. They are looking better, a good molt will help with that tho. He cut their wings, just didn't know to only cut one side, he actually cut them so low on both sides they still couldn't fly. The neighbor sent his other 6 out to butcher 2 weeks ago. They looked better since he got them off the cracked corn. I bought food for him, and he fed them, they chowed

They have a good home now. In their own run. Now if the tom can just figure things out!

Ok I went out, felt under her wings, shoulder area and neck. She moved to sit down and started quivering. Does that mean she's hurt? She didn't make a sound, just sat there while I had my look. I did not find any scratches or open wounds. I did feel and see some more feathers coming in just under her wing area and down the sides. I moved each wing she didn't seem to mind. She didn't try and make a mad dash.

I think the quivering is ok. A few of my BBW turkeys do that from time to time.

You have Beautiful turkeys by the way!

Thank you! I think they are doing well. Just need to get this mating thing down and maybe life will go back to normal. No more problems with them tonight. At feed time he must have let her eat first because her crop was full his wasn't. So I gave him some more, he's good to go now. But she wasn't happy he got fed again. She got a little to hold her off as she went for his bumpy things on his neck. (not sure what they're called) Yea I was worried about the quivering, was worried he hurt her. Turkeys are rough lol.

When does turkey laying season end, where you are? Here in SE Louisiana, it has pretty much ended, bit starts again mid December. Most of my Hollands have finished molting, except my oldest 3 year hen, she look like someone cut all her feathers 2 inches long! LOL
