Two hens with swollen face and bubbly eyes

I have 2 hens that have a swollen face, only on one side, with a bubbly discharge from the eyes and a clear discharge from the nose that does not smell.

One hen is 6 months old, the other hen I'm not sure....at least 2 years.

We have them quarantined and I will be making a trip to TSC this afternoon for whatever is recommended by you guys.

Of course I have been reading all of the nasty things this could be.....and I was leaning towards Coryza but there is no odor.

ETA: there are no other symptoms, no sneezing, coughing, etc and both are eating and drinking. We did last week treat the whole flock for lice (dusted with poultry dust) and gapeworms. Could it be possible that the dusting has caused this?

it is eveident they have a respiratory disease ( some time called a cold which chicken can't get)
I would do this immediately

(1) if your store has aureomycin buy it and put in the water
(2) you need Vetrx and it is used with the medication in the water 1 tsp per gallon of water
1/2 tsp Vetrx down the throat
1 drop in each eye to clear sinus's

here is what to do if they do not have aureomycin
you can buy duramycin till you get a stronger medication from a supply house

and put two tsp of duramycin per gallon and vetrx also

THEY DEFINETLY DO NEED SOME ANTIBIOTICS TO GET THEM OVER THE RESPIRATORY DISEASE

also you didn't say if they had any blood in the droppings?

this if so could be coccidiosis

is the feed your giving them a new sack or has it been opened a long time?

feed over a month old which the tag would have the milling date on it

is generally lacking in vitamins

also you could put Vetrex on the head of all the chickens sick and under the wings and 1/2 tsp down the throat
and 1 tsp per gallon of water
this is a herbal medication that does help with the repiratory disease

natural probiotic recipe is is:
THIS IS FOR ONE CHICKEN
IF FEEDING MORE CHICKENS MULTIPLY THE RECIPE TIMES AMT OF CHICKENS TREATED.
3 tbsp of dry crumbles
4 tbsp of milk, sweet, sour, or buttermilk or a mixture of all or some
1 tbsp of yoguart of non flavored yoguart ( no artificial sweetmer)
mix good
AFTER PUTTING vIT'S IN
PUT 1 TBSP OF APPLE SAUCE FOR THE WET MASH PROBIOTIC

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH CHICKen FED
and add 1- 400 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule for each chickEN fed this wet mash
putting it in the wet mash

FOR each chickenNyour treating
so for each chickEN use 2 tBsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E

and feed each chicken
2 tBsp full of the wet mash probiotic and what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week
then quit the Vit E make just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life

All the while after mdicating the birds use
do not use ACV with medication

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the chicken water so their gut flora wil be regulated
they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are over coccidiosis
the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem
take all the electrolytes out of the water

I have sent you an email Glenda.....forgot one thing....while i'm waiting for the auromycin, our feed mill has sulmet, would that be appropriate or shouldn't I waste my time with that?

if it is a cold then the sulmet is good to use

as is the wet mash probiotic

I would get on the sulmet immediately
a note here
put 1/2 pkg of raspberry jello in each gallon of sulmet water
this helps the taste and they will get on it

also add to the wet mash probiotic

recipe
for several hens
1 qt of dry feed crumbles
2 qts of water
2 tsps of sulmet
add just water
instead of milk and yoguart

then for one chicken wet mash
3 tbsp of dry crumbles
6 tbsp of water
add 3/4 tsp of sulmet every morning for two mornings
as well as put it in the water for only water to drink

as this will get the sulmet into their gut immediately
most chickens like wet mash

and the milk products shouldn't be added when adding the sulmet

well I hope the medication works
as I told you go get the sulmet asap


I would use the wet mash probiotic with two vit's
3 tbsp of dry feed crumbles
4 tbsp of milk
1 tbsp of yoguart
mix well
add 1000 mg of Vit E by cutting end of capsule and squeezing it on the wet mash
one Vit B complex crushed and added to wet mash
now mix good and top with large tbsp of apple sauce
multiply this by the amt of chickens fed it

so give it a try and use the recipe for individual chicken and times it times the amt of chickens fed it

as they are isolated the chickens need this help

most chickens will eat it readily and go for the wet mash and the probiotic is the milk and yoguart



I am very strong on the porbiotic wet mash
it does a lot of good moisture wise for the bird

the wet mash is very good for added moisture in the chickens body at this time they may have a fever also.

no I believe it is a respiratory disease
it is gotten from wild birds drinking and eating from the chicken waterers and feeders
saliva with disease germs are there left on the feed and in the water so the chickens pick it up

no the dusting is not harmful it just happened at this time

keep using the vetrx
twice a day
it is very important for the birds sinus's
so put drops in twice a day and give 1/2 tsp twice a day and rub head and under the wings with it good
I would add 1 tsp of vetrx with the medication in the water

it is herbal and not effecting the medication any

the birds ability to clear the sinus cavity is helped by the vetrx

.......this make a LOT of sense now Glenda as our chickens LOVE to get up onto the wild bird bath and drink the water

I also have various "buckets" of water outside around the yard that are changed daily, as the chickens free range during the day and will drink the water from those, rather than going back to the coop for water.

Should I stop this??? And what about the rest of my flock? Should I treat as needed, or as a preventative for the rest?

aT least while treating do away with the outside water
it will not hurt them to come to the chicken house
They need just water with 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of water
this will help their gut flora

I never had out side waterers due to the wild birds coming
I would quit this for the winter months now

and yes I would treat all the chickens for the 5 days I think it is
or what ever the pkg of medication says
and yes I would feed them the probiotics with wet mash
once a day
doctor the two sick one with the vit's seperately while they are sick

Got it!! That's what my husband just said.....put the outside waterers AWAY!!

I am getting Sulmet tomorrow from the feed mill and am ordering the other tonight online!!

I have my work cut out for me tomorrow!!

I hope I don't lose Mimi...she's the one in the worst condition!!
