Two things I've learned NOT to do around chickens

Apperently freckles look like bugs. I have lots of freckles on my arms and legs they get pecked all the time

If you ever watch yellow jackets, as they buzz around you, you'll notice that they pause over your freckles. I've wondered if they are checking to see if the spots are bugs.

I have no problem wearing flip flops around my birds. Right now I only have one brat that grabs my toes, and that's a Black Copper Marans cockerel named Pierre. But Pierre is a biter and will bite your fingers, toes, clothes, etc. He's getting better about that though. The other birds leave my feet alone. I have learned not to wear any jewelry, nail polish, anything at all that's red, and I try to cover my freckles (the bane of being Irish, lol), though that's not easy in this hot weather. I have a few that will follow the dogs around, but only because they want to tug on their collars. My Cuckoo Marans mixed pullet Rose was just picking on my chihuahua boy Cooper a few minutes ago because she saw a white tag attached to his collar, and she wanted it. I turned his collar and tucked the tag and she left him alone after that. Oh, can't have any cuts or bruises either, and I learned a long time ago that if I'm talking and they suddenly begin to show a lot of interest in what I'm saying, it's time to move the bird AWAY from my face, and close my mouth. I hate getting my teeth pecked! And one almost got my eyeball the other day...

Mine also try to get my toenails when I wear flip flops. I have also learned not to let your "flips flop" too much cuz if the heel of them gets some chicken poo on it, you get a nice splash up the back of your leg. Yeah, not a good feeling.

This afternoon I learned not to put my face down near a yogurt feeding frenzy -- needed windshield wipers for my glasses!!

When I last had chickens the only shoes I wore were Birkenstocks... I had blood blisters all over between the straps from the pecking! Augh!

I have a parrot now, and the rules of "no shinies" are pretty much the same. ChuChu yanked one of my nose rings (a closed ring, not a stud) out of my nose once. She is no longer allowed near my face. *lol*

I was going to say that mine dont' try to eat me much, and they let me walk around the yard whenever, and they really don't even scratch that bad when I'm wrangling them for wing trimming or new lebgbands.....

but then I rememebered my "secret trick" --- I always toss scratch off the deck BEFORE I come down into the yard

The distraction technique works very well on the birdbrains
