Tylan 50 dosage for swollen eye and bubbles with runny nose? Help!

did you know that you can also use the tylan injectable and drop it in eyes to help clear up and drop in mouth too. I give .5 cc and up injected in neck or breast for 3 to 5 days and its great stuff.

You have the same problem that I do. My husband is in charge of culls since I am a bit too soft hearted. The only thing is after 20 years in the military and a tour in Iraq he just can't hardly do it either. I am not going to insist he do it either. I would suggest if you can't bring yourself to cull them (which honestly is the only way to be sure to beat the disease) you might consider vaccinating your whole flock including the youngsters. It won't cure a sick bird, but may prevent it from infecting your new birds. It is a bit of a gamble because if it is ILT (a herpes virus) is very difficult to keep from spreading. A virus is so very, very small it may be in your nostrils, on your hair, or even riding the wind on a dust particle. Truly a horrible opponent. We had diagnosed ILT in our adult birds outside, we also had chicks hatching, and chicks of various ages brooding in our basement. Just couldn't cull, so we decided to vaccinate for ILT which can be done at 4 weeks and again at 10 weeks. We also did the adults. This is a gamble because there is always a chance that we have brought it downstairs and we will have chicks infected before we can establish some immunity.

If you can get one bird tested you will know what you have going on. There are so many of these resp. illnesses you are just guessing without the necropsy. The antibiotics can be a shot in the dark and you will still get carriers. Anyway, talk with peter brown at www.firststatevetsupply.com and he can guide you on the vaccines. We have decided to give ours ILT, coryza, MG, and Fowl pox vaccines. It's costly for ALL of them, but these birds are pets AND a hobby and we have decided we want to protect them as best we can. Chickengrl, I isolated Pearl and she seems so weak despite the extra loving she getting. If she doesn't make it, I'll use her for a necropsy. I'm really unsure how to proceed with that whole deal. Thank you for all your helpful advice and info, I certainly appreciate it.

Google for example: Virginia state veterinarian or USDA veterinarian. You can also look for your nearest veterinary university and ask them for assistance.

I appreciate the thanks for DH's service. I also spent 20 years in the Navy and spent time in Kuwait on the Iraq border and other unsavory places. I think that's why we appreciate the simpler things in life like our chickens! You never know how wonderful the little things can be until you no longer have them. Anyway, I hope it all works out for you. it can be so very frustrating. I have found this forum to be very helpful!!

How is the ventilation in your coop? I had a brief issue with some of my chicks in a brooder hubby made.It was set too low to the ground,and even though i raked manuer every couple days,the airflow wasn't very good.I made my self some new brooders,and the chicks I had issues with I treated with antibiotic injections( I used Baytril though) and then a round of Tylan 50 in the drinking water for the rest who were with them. 15 ccs to 1 gallon of water for a few days works well. When wiping the eyes,I used a peroxide/water solution.All waterers and feeders are cleaned daily/every other day in a bleach solution. I have a large barrel Bleach water is kept in,so when I pull feeders and waterers(etc) out,they are cleaned then dropped in the bleaching barrel to soak(usually overnite) then put out on my work tables to dry.

Mississippi: Did you have to get a prescription for Baytril? That was my understanding. It is supposed to be much better than Tylan if your vet will give it to you. Thanks!

After it rains good or I keep the ground wet,they clear up.

@ WhiskeyBay----- Ventilation is excellent. It does get dusty though, living on a hill with dusty, sugary sand and a constant breeze, it can be irritative.



Ok, so Pearl's eye inflammation has reduced almost completely. She still has goopy, clearish-white drainage from it. She isn't really eating. I make her drink every 2 hours. I gave her some scrambled eggs but she wasn't interested. I think along with feeling punky, she's pouting a bit since she's unable to play with her brothers and sisters outside. I must admit, I attempted to let her hang out with her siblings (so to speak) but there are 2 adolescent RIR roos in there who immediately jumped and pecked on her. I quickly scooped her up.


I've ordered the vaccines for the rest of the family.

I had something that sounds EXACTLY like this about 2 yrs ago, and I ended up losing all my flock, which was my business. I refused to sell sick birds. I lost about $30,000 total. This is a NASTY thing, and I tried EVERYTHING AND I MEAN EVERYTHING. I was using one whole bottle of LS-50 a day for months in the end, which costs $50/bottle. I never did get rid of it. I'm trying again to start my business up and I am actually TERRIFIED the new birds will get it again. So any information you learn about this would be more than greatly appreciated.

Good luck and I hope you don't go through what I did. It was not something I would wish on anyone. Not trying to scare you, I think I just never found what worked whether it be meds, or culling. I couldn't cull, it was too hard, but I'd do it at this point if I had to.

P.s. Do NOT put her back in with the flock, and definitely don't intermingle any germs from each pen.
