UGLY Mexican Hen

Unless I miss my guess, you are in the Lago Chapala area. You might have to leave the area to get good chicken stock. Those hens seem to be the type people raise to fight, gallos de pelea. They are light weight and fast.

If you are looking for egg layers, I suggest Rhode Island Reds or Buff Orpingtons. They make a sturdier chicken and are duel purpose. You can eat the roosters; they actually have some meat on them.

You might ask around at one of the local chicken farms. Usually, you will smell then before you see them.

I think this is funny and interesting. It's a good thing to get them while they're young so they lay in the laying boxes instead of all over the yard! I wondered what would happen bringing a new chick into the flock on Sunday. Would she follow Mr. & Mrs. Chicken back into the tractor and sleep in the coop above? It was a challenge getting her back into the box the first time but she did indeed sleep inside with the Mr & Mrs. Yesterday, when I brought her sisters home, I did the same as Sunday afternoon and opened the box into the tractor so they'd have to start off by going into the tractor, knowing that's their new home. Now, on Sunday, the lonely sister darted out of the box as if she was really WILD! But these two sisters hid inside the box like they were doves. Haha...they let me pick them up and put them inside the pen. At the end of the night, I went to check that all 5 were cozy inside the coop. I opened the door to the most funny site. Mrs. Hen & 2 sisters are on the perch while one sister is hiding behind them. It appeared that Mr. ROO was forced to stand up being he's so large. Probably not the most ideal situation and we'll have to fix that perching situation but thought it was funny that he had to stand up. Now this a.m. I looked inside the coop to find a big ol blob of poop where all the girls wanted to squeeze in and sleep together....pooh!

YES, They are hens whos roos are fighters...i think I already stated that. Don't you think I've already checked around? Unless you buy like 100 from Guadalajara, you're not going to get just 1-5 hens. It's not as simple as you think. I've been looking for 6 months. The problem is that this isn't the state for good laying hens. My neighbor that has the cock fighters has these hens and was willing to sell me one for $45 US. I saw the eggs, they're good size. There's a boys home in the next pueblo over. They have a chicken project. Some pastor got them some decent hens from another pueblo about an hour away. Well, they lost his phone number or it's out of service. So I went with the project manager to a guy he searched out. A loco guy. We went to his house to pay $60 pesos for hens. The hens were all in the trees! He showed me the eggs and they were small. The project manager figured they weren't being fed well. True, true, since it appeared the loco man was pretty much homeless, shacked up on the side of an exterior wall. I checked with all the vet and pet stores. All of them in la ribera say this is the guy to get chickens from. I've done my homework and I accept where I live. I'm going to cross the hens with the black sex link roo I've got. Also want them to go broody on the cinnamon red sex link that the viviero gifted me. So those chicks with be rsl hen x bsl roo . It's been a process but it's not as easy as you think it would be. It's not easy finding someone with chickens. Our produce guy was suppose to put me in contact with someone in the barrio with a bunch of chickens. Of course he's never home. My other neighbor knows someone in the village with chickens and promised to bring me a hen or two. That was 3 months ago and I'm still waiting. The writing is on the wall. I don't live in the USA, I live in Mexico and this is the way it is.

btw, i read that those hens are great for free range. maybe they'll eat the scorpions...
"American Gamefowl are some of the hardiest birds that you will ever come across, and in our opinion, by far the most beautiful. They are known for being excellent flyers, very good foragers, and you can't beat them for broodiness. All of these traits make them an excellent choice for free ranging, until the stags come of age. Then they will need to be separated, as they will fight to the death defending their territory. This is something that is part of their nature, being "game," and nothing you do to them will change this unless you start mixing non-game breeds into them, and even then it doesn't mean you will not still have this issue to deal with. This is why you see many people keep mature cocks on tethers attached to barrels, as it is a great way to keep them separated, and at the same time, allow them to move around enough to keep them happy and healthy. It is also common practice to dub cocks tight to the head, and remove the ear lobes and wattles as well. This practice was originally done for the pit, but now it is done for purely aesthetic reasons. Hen's lay mid-spring to late summer, but some will continue until early fall. As a rule, games are normally easily handled birds, and are a joy to own. We highly recommend at least a pair of these birds in every yard.

You've been here! LOL

Yes they run the neighborhood. I have two hens that fly over the neighbor's fence and take them their eggs. I feed them, they feed the neighborhood. And they did this even when their wings were clipped. They can fly on the roof with a clipped wing. Amazing.

There is a whole section of phoenix known for the thousands of wild chickens, peacocks, and guineas running around.

Mahonri got a pic of a peacock in his yard, yesterday.

Wow! They are great looking hens! You learn something everyday! I would never have imagined these chickens in Modesto!

The world gets smaller all the time!

My breeding project started with a teeny weeny banty hen given to us by a family who didn't speak a lick of English. They were so surprised we wanted the little thing--they'd say, "But her eggs are sooooo tiny!"

I think the little ones are the best. With the best personality. They are SO proud when they lay an egg.
