Uh...my girls just killed a toad :(

I hope they eat it.
It's the partially disemboweled baby mice they drag about that looks pretty disgusting.
Mine love the little pink ones. There was a nest of them in a bag of mulch I was putting in a flower bed. Mama took off, and I knew she wasn't going to be back so I collected them as I found them and gave the chickens a treat. I felt kind of bad, but it was that or they'd die a much longer, painful death as they starved.

Here the chickens seem to know which are edible and which are not.
That makes sense. If they didn't know what they could or couldn't eat, I'm guessing we wouldn't have chickens because they'd have all poisoned themselves by now.

See, mice worry me. Had they got a mouse I would have took it ASAP. Here is almost entirely farm country. Beef and dairy cattle and primarily crop farms. I fear mouse poisons (as they are a big issue around here for home owners) and would prefer my girls not ingest a d-con laden mouse or some such. But then, barn and feral cats don't drop like flies so:confused:

Good point about poisons. Never considered that.

I might not have either! Except that during growing up, we had a mouse issue for a time and also had indoor cats. My parents used D-con in the basement and attic and my mom was sure to get any mouse found in a trap or per chance caught by a cat, immediately away from them in case that mouse had fed on the D-con. Farms around here generally have cats that do the job but homeowners don't use that means as much lol.

If you're not putting out poison, you have no need to worry about the mice. They don't travel that far. They will travel about 25 feet from home to find food.
We have poison blocks in the crawl space as we have waaaay too many mice in fall and winter...IN my house!:barnieUnfortunately, they have gotten into dog food bags and random other "treats" and stored boatloads in the computer desk drawer, the dryer vent, my boys' dresser drawers...even the engine block from an old mud truck and tool box drawers and the riding mower SEAT in the pole barn (nearly 100' behind our house!). Luckily they rarely move during the day and the chickens are very securely enclosed and tucked in at night in their fortress of a coop:thumbsup I think our farm territory breeds bionic mice though lol

My girls will fight the roo for a snake, frog, worms, etc. He’s pretty good about sharing everything except the snakes.

They love to cackle at the groundhog and the bunnies, but anything small and squirmy and they’re on it! They got a little freaky about the raccoon in the live trap this morning tho! It’s fun to watch them when they see something new.
