UK Law change - all bird keepers must register their birds with DEFRA

Interesting conversation. I've very recently brought my girls home, nothing was said to me by the seller. As of today, Monday 10th March 2025, the government page https://aphascience.blog.gov.uk/avian-influenza/ still states that registering less than 50 is voluntary.

Is this a case of just a forgotten update?...
Hi and welcome to BYC! I'm not sure what you're asking re a case of a forgotten update?

Keyword: voluntary. That is all you need to know.

I take it they're asking if it's no longer voluntary but the site wasn't updated stating that yet

I thought the question was: is "voluntary" correct?
Or did the law change but that particular website was not updated? ("forgotten update")
Ohh ok, thank you :)

My reply remains the same: Keyword: voluntary. That is all you need to know. I highly doubt the gov't would forget to update any page regarding a change in regulation < that would actually be against the law.

This page says you do have to register:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-as-a-keeper-of-less-than-50-poultry-or-other-captive-birds

It says it was updated in December of 2024.

I don't know how accurate it is either, but it looks official to me
I don't live in the UK, and I'm not familiar with which sites do have official government guidance and which ones just look like it.

This link?
https://aphascience.blog.gov.uk/avian-influenza/

That is a blog, and that post was probably published in 2022 (judging by the dates I see mentioned in it.)

So it was probaby correct when it was published, but the change in rules happened after that. I would be surprised if there is anyone responsible for checking all old blog posts any time the rules change. I'd be questioning it too, trying to find a more recent source to be sure.

If it doesn't involve taking money I can see it.
