How do you go to a furniture auction and come back with chickens?!.......never mind! you've got some nice looking birds. Better watch out for chicken multiplicationitis, it's a tough one to shake!!

Had a chat with one of the older guys down at the allotment shop about incubators and how I'm after a decent model so he popped home and brought something back..

"I've had a few good hatches, just lemme have 2 or 3 chicks and you can have it til May".

Turns out it's Chinese but I can't say no to stuff lent out of decentness as he could of just left it in his shed for a few months. Suppose I'll have a mess around with it this week and see how stable it is temps/humidity wise.

Awww that is so sweet of him! At least gives you more time to source a bargain! Your other option of course is to get a silkie or 2- that is what I have done and it has worked out so well - no having to worry about a brooder etc - mum does it all! So lovely seeing 3 day old chicks been taught to run around and look for bugs outside with thier fluffy mummy :love:love:loveThey cost me €30 for the 2 and they hardly eat a thing - when they are not being broody they even lay quite well :lau

That’s very kind of him to give you a lend. Yes definitely check temp & humidity with known to be correct thermometer & hygrometer. Good luck & happy hatching :jumpy

I have that incubator. It was a nightmare. I had to constantly check it and make adjustments. The digital readouts were so far out they were in a different country! It was a stressful couple of hatches I had with it. It could be that I had a bad one but I won't use it again. I did have a reasonable hatch with it but it was hard work!

Hope everyone is well; sorry to have been so quiet recently. Now have 24 eggs in the incubator and just set one of the silkies; @PouleChick is right, all three of mine have been broody over the last few weeks.

I think my big maino was from them, @Yorkshire Coop; its done well for me, despite mixed reviews. I'm so anal about temperature and humidity, @MSirrell91, you can get wafer hygrometers from an agricultural store for a few quid, if that. I've two ancient ones that still read true. I tried buying a combined thermo/hygrometer probe last year but it was way off and impossible to recalibrate.

Hi @Sneebsey! Wondered where you had been! Have you got araucana eggs in the incubator? @MSirrell91 did you set any eggs? Definately right though, get another thermometer and separate hygrometer. So long as you know that you have something that you know reads true it will make thing so much easier!
