Hi Kim

Congrats on the final hatch result. That's certainly a huge improvement on the last one...did you ever hear back from Durham Hens? Shame about the one that didn't make it out of the shell. They look great.
No sign of anything happening with mine yet, but it should be today or tomorrow I think.....I really should keep better records! I'm pretty sure I set them 4 days after yours but it might have been 5.

Unfortunately we had another set back with Zak on Saturday morning when he totally refused to jump the same log he popped over beautifully on Friday, even though we were heading home. Tried to give him a lead over it multiple times with Archie but he was having none of it and of course Ian was livid! Yesterday it was back to the arena for more ground work and he started off by refusing to even step over a pole. I had my work cut out trying to think how to build up his confidence, whilst trying to cope with my own frustration and keep Ian from losing his temper completely. And it was far too hot to be running around in an arena with an uncooperative horse. Arrgh! Unfortunately it is going to take a lot of time and perseverance. I spent the early hours of this morning googling "training a horse to jump" and trawling through You Tube videos. Feeling a little more positive about it now, but I think my problems are going to be time scales....Ian needs him to hunt at least a few days this coming season.... controlling my frustration (no easy task) and Ian's scepticism about Natural Horsemanship. Don't think my horses are going to get a huge amount of attention in the near future!

Anyway, I must crack on.

Best wishes

Barbara

Ok so I've noticed some pretty strange behaviour in my 3 week old chicks... 3 of them have started putting their heads to one side and running round in circles...almost to the point of falling over. One of them actually did. They look as if they can't keep their heads up. Is it just because it's been so hot? Or is there something wrong with them? I have stated putting vitamins in their water again just in case they're lacking something...but other than that I can only think it's some kind of heat stroke :/ bit worried about them as you can imagine! Any suggestions?

Hi all i am in Runcorn UK and have 3 brahma chicks 6 weeks old

Hi and welcome to the thread :frow
How are your chicks doing?

Could be heat or could be vitamin deficiency. Can you get some non iron baby vitamins into them? A vitamin supplement in the water would be beneficial too.
Have they got plenty of shade? Keeping the water in the shade too really helps.

Hi @Yorkshire Coop
Yeh I've had a couple of people say that so I've put a few drops of Abidec in their water. They've also been saying some electrolytes like sav a chick? I'm guessing it's only in America so would dioralyte do the same thing? I think it is the heat...we've had it very warm up here, about 25-26C....have you had it? I'm dreading tomorrow if it's going to be as warm as they say it is. I've kept it as cool as I can and shaded to try and cool them down, I keep replacing the water as well so it's cold. Anything else? I'm going to clean them out again too to make sure there's no nasties growing in there with them.

Hi Barbara :D

Your eggs were 4 days behind mine ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/655508/uk-member-please-say-hi/1140_30#post_17222244 so you should have hatchers anytime soon :pop Just did a quick search of the thread and found the post :D Very handy things like that to double check set dates!

Oh goodness that's a real set back again with Zak :( You have an awful lot of things to contend with there and as you say time is always against you. I too see no point trying to tackle an uncooperative horse and especially in the heat, goodness it's been hot today
As long as I try to finish on a half good note that's enough for me. They feel your frustration and I find it's a never ending circle when they get like that. Positive, positive, positve thoughts Barbara. Hope you get him to come round and he gets to your way of thinking soon :hugs

It sounds like you are doing all you can and yes hot here too!! 29C this afternoon and I popped out at just after 8 and it was still 26C then :th

I'm not sure I would give them dioralyte as this is more a sodium replacement, I think? You can get multi vits for chickens from feed shops etc and if you don't have one close Amazon is always your friend ;)

I use Adibec too but I give them a couple of drops from a syringe at the end of their beak so they don't aspirate it. This way I know they are getting enough.

Yeh it is still pretty warm here too...being eaten alive by midgies!
I work in a chemist you see and dioralyte was just the first thing I could think of that I know has electrolytes in it :/ is there a particular one you use? I will try them with a few drops of Abidec on their beaks as well then to make sure here definitely getting it...haven't seen them drinking much but I guess they probably are. I just find it so amazing that I'm having trouble with these littlies inside, but my two outside are absolutely fine! Incredible!

I use different ones depending where I go but this is an easy one to get ~
