Sorry to hear this, @CCUK. I'm glad she was able to have a proper home with you after her ordeal, but sorry that she did not have longer to enjoy her freedom. I hope her sisters' health continues.

@Hybridchucks, I used to care for doves owned by an elderly neighbour. I was given them by his wife after his death but was forced to pass them on due to buzzards, magpies and cats taking the squabs. Any ideas on how one can keep them secure whilst maintaining their freedom? I built a long loft type dealy with a mesh aviary, with an exit port at the top front. The cat could climb it and it did nothing to deter avian predators.

Ah I see, perhaps a shelter that is high up and a cat couldn't possibly climb up? I can't say I relate as mine are Diamond Doves, which are a very small species. My birds have a large aviary with mesh all around, they fly around in it not as good as freedom but predator free. Well done for taking the doves on, they're lovely creatures <3

Yes, shelter was up high on the back wall, but the crafty thing would get up the mesh. No idea how, but it is what it is. I probably will not try again with them, at least for now, but they were lovely to be around. My favourite was a grey and white female, obviously with pigeon blood.

Diamond Doves are lovely; just had a look. They're so tiny and that red eye-ring is delightfully weird. I'm glad you're enjoying them.

I rescued/kidnapped a chicken from a friend yesterday. I was moving reindeer for them when I went to look at her chickens. There was a little bantam that was struggling to walk so I caught it to have a look. Turns out she had a baseball sized mud/poo ball stuck to her foot. It was solid and took some removing. I asked if I could take her and they let me. Anyway she had a warm soak in Epsom salts and she is in a cage in my living room now. She can't walk on the foot but is in good health otherwise. She is a little sweet heart. I think she is a mille fleur cochin bantam. Meet speckle!

I'm going to give her another clean later. I just hope she will start to regain use of it. She pick it right up every time she stands up. I think she is still compensating for the weight of the mud ball.
 
That's a nasty bumble, @CCUK. Good on you for stepping in to care for her. If the epsom soaks do not help to draw the pus out, you may want to make a small incision to help you to extract it.

Her colour isn't mille-fleur, but I can't quite place exactly what she is; her e-series appears to be mixed, but she's obviously mottled; very pretty. She does appear to be a Pekin/Cochin bantam.

Also, hooray for free chickens. ;)
