UK Member Please Say HI

You're a bit of a silkie addict!

Maybe a little :gig

This time of year I usually let my broodies sit eggs to break them before the winter so that I'm not having to put them in broody cages.

However, I do have one hen that has only been off eggs one month ago and she's already broody again :barnie

I can't believe it. Today is the first time in a very long time that I have had to BUY eggs! I have 20 hens, some I know are older and have stopped laying. But there is at least 15 that should be laying! But most are moulting or have finished. Shorter, colder days has an effect. I have never had NO eggs! Only Roo my chocolate Orpington has been laying.

It is actually cheaper to buy a whole cooked chicken than to buy 15 free range eggs!

Hi guys I’m looking for any low cost led lighting recommendations for my coop over winter to aid with egg production. ( 5 hens )

Either solar or rechargeable battery’s.

Do they need to be timed or does the solar charge simply fail later in the day?

I’m sure I’ll be out range for an remotes and no power in the coop.

The coop is a 6ft x 6ft shed.

Any help or suggestions welcome.

Thanks

With the weather being wet and humid at the moment, they're loving it. I've caught them early and started treating the hutch.

The chicks just hatched so they've been removed out of harms way. My hen will have to remain there for a week or so during ongoing treatment. I can't risk her bringing them into my main coop.

Have any of you used anything else or would you recommend anything extra?

I've dealt with a case of lice quite a while back in our free range flock but never red mites.

Are you sure it's Redmire? That picture looks like a tick. I've had an ongoing redmite problem for the past two years. I used you total mite and it was OK. It just wasn't as residual as I'd have hoped. I also use ivermectin drops on them. I finally managed to about get rid of them using allmite powder. It's essentially DE so please don't tell the mite specialists, I'll get boo hooed! It did work for me.
