UK pigeon owners

Pics
The local Animal Control called me one time, wanting to know if I was missing any bird dogs; seems I was better known than I thought. The lady said they were holding a female stray that had been id'd as a German Shorthair and was running out of time before having to be put down. The lady knew enough to know that it wasn't a German Shorthair at all, but an English Pointer...my breed. I told her to bring it by; I'd try to find the owner among my field trial connections, rather than see it gassed. Never did find the owner, but I worked the dog enough to know that she had an abundance of natural ability, or someone had done a pretty fair job of training her. I couldn't keep her; being unregistered, I couldn't run her in competition and wasn't foolish enough to breed her. I finally gave her to a young guy who was just looking for a dog to hunt over. I'd grown attached to her, and hated to see her go.
That's a real shame. Atleast you found a home for her. It's a wonder that the owner hadn't contacted the shelter to see if she had turned up. My mum used to breed clumber spaniels and springers. We used to do field trials and hunts. It was great but I was too young for my own dog so I just used to do the beating. We got paid £5-10 a day!

I always thought she'd probably gotten lost at an area trial by an out-of-state owner or handler who couldn't stay around, and had no idea where to search.

I like ferals and considered starting just as you describe
The best pigeon I ever owned was a feral squab I raised by hand "Jackson". He flew home from Gateneau Quebec to Moncton NB Canada after being imprisoned for close to a year a distance of 719 miles by car. (Not exactly as shown but so close I would have a hard time to tell the difference).

Imprisoned? What makes me think there's an interesting tale in there?

I could tell Jackson parents were good racing stock but could not catch either of them so I robbed the nest that was located beneath the Gunningsville bridge (horse and buggy structure now is long gone and replaced). I may have been 12 years old at the time. I sold the bird to a fellow fancier who moved away to Gatineau when the bird was about 10 years old. I advised to never release him as I had already sold him a number of times and the new owners finally just gave up on him and told me to keep him after raising champion birds from his offspring. I guestimate his age at about 16 years old when he finally gave up the ghost in his home loft in Moncton.

Just one of the many birds I had who I will never forget as long as I have a memory.

I think I saw the post! That's very impressive! how long did it take?

I am not really sure I do know it took him less than 24 hours. I do not know exactly what time he escaped or when exactly he arrived at his home loft. The party I sold him to called and informed me the day of his escape and was only aware of his absence not the time of his escape. He was back home the next day sometime after noon.

I do know pigeons are not supposed to fly at night unless properly conditioned and trained to do so. I would guess somewhere in the realm of 12 -18 hours if I were to make an educated guess.
