UK pigeon owners

I spoke to the owner again tonight. He said the longest race he has done was 750 miles! This pigeon is a18mth old female and still in training. He has 250 in his loft! Sounded like a really nice guy. He has asked me to keep it till Wednesday now to make sure it's fully recovered. It made me start thinking about getting some. I'm probably a bit feathered out at the minute and I don't think the wife would be to happy:oops:!! Maybe one day! I could do with learning about them first!
Even better you let her recover a bit longer so she's fit to fly. Adding some extra fat like sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, raw chopped peanuts, or even corn to the budgie mix could help if she's too thin.

IMO the more you learn about pigeons, the more you will want some.

I've got some sunflower seeds that I put out for wild birds and an over friendly blackbird! It shouts at me in the morning if I don't throw it some seed! Do you have pigeons?
Yes, that's one of my birds in my avatar. Just got my first 8 homers in Dec 2017 but I studied up on them for many months before that.:D

There's (too many,) pics of my birds at this link -

Dum inter homines ... let us be humane. - good sentiment!:thumbsup

That's great! I just keep wondering how I could smuggle some into the house without being noticed! This one is so quiet, I'd have thought it would be cooing or something but not a peep. No smell either. It's in my living room at the moment! Your the first person to mention my sig let alone know what it says!

Nice story to hear. Since this bird made it to races, it was likely trained on some longer hauls and is a proven homer. That said, if you give the bird the best chances it can get (get it healthy, hydrated, and settled down from the stress), there's a good chance it makes it home! Please keep us posted if you find out from the owner that the bird made it home.

I released it earlier today. It took a little bit to come out and then flew off...and headed back towards my house! I was about a mile away. When I got home I left the carrier on the table in my garden incase it did come back but thankfully it didn't. I'm quite sad really I quite enjoyed looking after her. She REALLY likes sunflower seeds! I Phoned the owner and he will let me know if she returns safely.

Yeah. They release alot of pigeons not far from here. They have a massive truck full of birds! It's really got me interested. My wife says I can only get some if we get a bigger house though! I'll just let her keep buying and breeding her rabbits! That could be good leverage!
