UK pigeon owners

@biophiliac @Hokum Coco can I use regular HUMAN non antibiotic wound cream on my injured pigeons head? It has pus coming out of it. I'm just cleaning it now with sterile water.

I will defer to the more experienced members on that. Is he eating, drinking, preening, eyes bright, not lethargic - you know, those signs of health.
Are you sure it is pus? I have heard that in birds pus is a much more solid cheesy like texture than in mammals...i know you are experienced with birds. I personally have never seen bird pus in real life.
I like to use homeopathic remedies for injuries if i can. I believe they are commonly available in UK if you are open to that PM me...

Sorry for late reply. I've cleaned it out the best I could. There was alot of dried blood on the feathers. I've got most of it off. There is no more bleeding. I cleaned it with sterile water and cotton buds. I did a quick search on using antiseptic cream and it's OK. I only used a little though. I'm going to the feedstore I use and they have proper animal wound cream. I've had this happen to my quails before and normally I just clean it up and a bit of purple spray and it heals after a week or so. But this had a liquid pus coming out from the middle. S/he looks OK now and has gone and sat in the nest with mummy! I'll give it another clean tomorrow. I've never really given much thought to homeopathic remedies but I'm open to suggestions. If it works I'm happy with that!

The head on the pigeon has sort of healed apart from a small hole in the middle. I have been cleaning it daily and using F10 antimicrobial wound care on it. It still has yellow pus coming out. The skin around the edges of the hole has gone yellow. I have about the healing properties of manuka honey so I got some. Not the cheapest honey I have bought at £13 a small tub(and that was on offer at half price!). So I've just cleaned it up and put a little on and around the wound. fingers crossed this will clear the last bit up. S/he is also flying from one side of the loft to the perches! The other two aren't yet!

So obviously I completely support you use of honey. I have also heard that less expensive honey works too - Manuka is the 'gold standard' according to many.

It was actually your suggestion of homeopathic remedies that got me thinking. I don't have a vet that I can see anymore so I rely on what I know and what peeps like your good self can suggest! In uk I can get hold of antibiotics in any form without a prescription. I US I believe the 'go to' for this type of injury is newsprint which would be very good. But the manuka honey could actually be better as it should dissolve the infected tissue as well as having very good anti bacterial and healing properties! I only applied it a couple of hours ago and already the yellow tissue seems to be darkening and there is hardly any discharge. I think a couple of days of this and s/he'll be fine.
The only problem with the honey is the shelf life is only 28 days when opened so I can have the rest on toast or in a cup of tea! It might clear a few things up on me!!

I hope not! It is a lovely looking bird. And it seems to be getting used to me holding it!

Well it's head is looking marvellous! There is a slight yellowing around the wound but that could be the honey. I cleaned and flushed it and a little bit of blood came out so that's a good sign. I covered it with honey again. I'll see again tomorrow.
I was thinking that because of this it may become a little behind with growing, it spent a lot of time hiding in the corner after this happened but it is flying up onto the perches, it's on and off the ledges all over! And sleeps sat right on the edge of the ledges where the nest bowls are. The other two are sat on the floor of the loft and have not even tried to fly onto the ledge yet nevermind the perches!

I'm surprised one of your cockbirds isn't wooing Boomer. 2 males in my loft covered all 6 hens.
