UK pigeon owners

P day tomorrow! I'm going to let the youngsters out tomorrow afternoon. I'm a little anxious but it has to be done! I've been getting them to go through the bobwires and they seem to have got the hang of them just fine. I've called the one with the injured head 'Squeak'! Because it is the only one that squeaks when I go in the loft! I also think it might be a male going by the eyes. If it is, it will be a good pair for Boomer! I'm still open to suggestions for names for the other two!

Ever since I had pets,,, dogs,,, cats,,, chickens,,, pigeons,,, I named them ALL. and never reused a name. Time came when I just ran out of suitable names.. :idunno so I turned here...

I will be awaiting your report! :caf

Well that went OK! I got all three on top and put the partition over amd opened the trap and bobs. Boomer got in there as well so I let her out and she just went. But the three youngsters were very apprehensive to go out. Squeak wad first the it's sibling. They stood on the entrance for 5-10 mins looking around then had a bit of a flutter about! So funny! There was a couple of crashes on the floor amd not to try amd land on the washing line! They ventured as far as the garage roof and one went as far as the house roof. Then boomer returned and looked a bit confused as to why there was others out! She stayed a while and flew off. One of the youngsters went to follow but got as far as the trampoline and landed. At this point I got the sunflower seeds out and got them in! I don't want them following Boomer! Phew! The third one didn't come out at all so I think it's going to need a little coaxing. But for first time I'm happy. I'll do this again tomorrow minus boomer! Then they can stay out a bit longer.

And boomers return!

It wasn't as nerve wracking as I thought but still can be a little worrying.

Glad it went so well for you! It is so much fun to watch them learn about their world. I'm sure your 3rd one won't need much coaxing. He will follow the other 2 soon.
I hope so. I did cut there out time a bit short as I was worried about them following Boomer. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Kids are out as well so it should be quiet. How are yours doing?

I just love watching mine fly. They are flocking up nicely now 8-12 together. They have been considerate(LOL) and not given me much to worry about. For about 3 weeks they would fly loops overhead but not really going out of sight for more than a few seconds at a time. This past week they have been disappearing for 15 - 30 minutes at a time. I think you should try to let your squeakers go at their own pace without Boomer until you feel like they are ready to fly with her.

Yesterday a group of 4 went walking down the middle of the street. They were a half block away and I saw them stand their ground and fail to yield to a car which stopped while they slowly moved off to the side.:he I went and chased them up. They seem to have a sense of entitlement that perhaps is my fault for spoiling them. The reason they were in the street was because they like the grit they find there better than the 3 expensive varieties I provide in the loft.

Once I saw 3 red tails circling overhead while they were flying but so far I don't see them as a major threat. I have wondered if they just 'know' instinctively that raptors are dangerous or if they have to learn by experience. I did notice them take off once as a hawk flew by but they weren't in a panic.

I hope it continues well for you.

I give another update how they go tomorrow. It's great yours are flying nicely together. It doesn't surprise me that they prefer Road grit to expensive bought grit! It's like saying chickens must have clean fresh water everyday but ad soon as it rains they drink straight out the muddiest puddle they can find! Mine really don't like being held everso much but when I go near them when there out they don't immediately fly off which makes me feel happy that they don't see me as a threat. I don't know how they will be with raptors. I haven't seen many round here but there is some outside of town. Hopefully it's instinctive to avoid them.

I predict you will make more advances in trust over time and I agree it is very satisfying. Recently I realized my original 8 birds had become much, much calmer with me. At first they would struggle so much when I would try to hold one that I thought my hands were just too small, but now they are pretty relaxed and I have no problem holding one. I think they take in how the young birds interact with me - so unafraid they can be a tad disrespectful at times!
