Un-attached aircells

Oh no, definitely not the shippers fault

This "shipper" had some wonderful skills and the packing job was out of this world!!...I just didn't know what I was looking at. I did see a few moving around and some with none at all.
I had one egg that had a huge air sack that was oblong in one that close to hatching. Is there anything I could have done to avoid that? It was huge on
one side and normal on the other.....day 19 and it died...

I have changed my methods and haven't had one completely on the side again, could be coincidence though.
I get my eggs, unpack and set in a carton(big end up). I only let them set a couple hours to get to room temp, anything more than this just seems like a waste to me. I then put them big end up in the bator and don't turn for 24 hours. It seems to me that the "side cells" got stuck that way from their first hours in the bator, by putting them big end up I have had no more happen. Then I just proceed as normal.... working well so far

Yep, thats exactly what I did this time around. I just wanted to test the theory before I said much....

Well......only 3 are developing. 1 of those has a pretty loose aircell though so I doubt it will make it. I already have 2 blood rings which for day 4 are more like tiny blood lines. Definitely not veining though. The rest of them....just nothing! No development at all. I'll leave them in another few days though.

I have had hundreds of eggs shipped to me and have never had more then 1 or 2 per set with a detached aircell. This is just awful to say but as I was first candling them my thought was "the seller had to shake every single egg to get them like this" so I did email her and said that they arrived and that I'm letting them sit 24 hours before I set them because I think they had a rough trip. Her email back said "at least they weren't all broke"

I won them on another auction site (not ebay) and I was the only bidder so I got them for the minimum bid. This was my first experience on that site, but it will be my last.

Oh...also wanted to add that the box was not crushed, smooshed, dented or otherwise compromised. Also, they were secure inside the box with lots of padding and bubble wrap. Which is another reason I think they were like this when they were shipped.

Thank you for posting this. I too had some questions about the aircells and I *thought* they were not supposed to move around in the egg when I candled them, but couldn't get confirmation about this (probably I wasn't asking the question right, since I'm new!) Your info here has cleared up a lot for me - thanks again!!

if they move BUT stay at the big end they can still do well, it is only the ones that move to the small end when moving them around that I have found do nothing at all.

Exactly! Also, some people have said that if you set them in a carton or turner that keeps them upright they do better then if they're laying on their sides.

I have never used an egg turner or incubated with the large end up before so this is all new to me. The embryos are all forming at the large end. I am reluctant to turn them on their side even for a moment to get a better candling view. It is a LOT more difficult to see anything from the large end. My eggs are very opaque to begin with and I could only see darkness. I could see veining in one egg with a less opaque shell so there may well be activity in the others. It has only been six days.

I also recieved eggs yesterday with 7 of the 15 having dettached air sacs!

I'm not surprised since they traveled from Illinois to California! Letting them rest 24 hrs and putting them in the turner this morning to start incubating. Lets keep each other updated ( kind of incubator, turner? temps, humidity, carton hatching? ) and see what kind of success we all have. Might help our future shipped egg hatches!! I will be keeping a daily journal, and I'm using a 1588 hovabator with auto turner, pre-set temp 9.5-100, humidity 45%-50% (will adjust accordingly to air sac developement) and 65% for lockdown.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
