Unacceptable Guest Dog

*** has lots of chickens. Swore up and down her dog was OK with chickens.
After an hour of telling her he wasn’t ok, and her saying she’s keeping extra special eye on him, I went to empty my bladder......

I’m down one bar rock chick. Broody has a bald patch from protecting chick. Dog went forcefully into her suv with explicit warning that if a paw hits my dirt it will be shot.

Why can people not have control over their dogs?

Because a dog is a predator species...and a highly effective one. He should never have been allowed near the chickens. There are a MINORITY of canines that could be trusted in such a scenario...and I am a dog rescue who would prefer to be safe, rather than sorry.

Our rescue dog spent a whole year on a leash until I felt that I could trust her. We also went through extensive calming training to keep her from her prey instinct. I still dont trust her enough to leave her alone with them but I trust her off leash with them

It sounds like (from reading the first 3 pages of comments) she doesn’t have good boundaries. Maybe ask her to attend dog training classes. I teach a basic 6wk dog obedience class for $90 (group sessions). I think it helps people find the ability to be the pack leader that they need to be for their dogs. My pup was terrible and finally lead me into dog training. Having a pup can be exhausting and even more so if you don’t set or can’t manage boundaries. My pup killed one of my chickens once or twice, but with the basic and intermediate training, it led me to learn to communicate with him and anticipate what he will do. My chickens aren’t free range or anything, but when wild turkeys come into our fenced backyard, my dogs don’t mess with them at all! So dogs can turn around... you just got to correct the owners behaviors! I like the crate idea. If you have a garage to keep guest dogs in or setup a kennel would be another idea. ...now it becomes a matter of maintaining your own boundaries.

So sorry you lost a chick. Lesson there for everyone.

We still have our 9 yo retriever on a long lead when our ladies and him are sharing the backyard. I don't think he will hurt them, but I'm smart enough to know that he can't be fully trusted.

How do you enforce this? I guess I kinda tiptoe around my MIL because the wedding is coming up but I find that she doesnt listen. I tried as the previous poster said to recommend a class for her pup...you'd swear I called her a bad mother from how offended she was.

That being said, she asked what color dress to wear to our wedding. I said "well the theme is black and white. My MOH will be wearing offwhite. It really doesnt matter what you wear as far as color. Just pick something you like."

I thought I was being nice. But then she said "ok I'll get a nice black dress"

...yea how would THAT look? I had to tell her any color but black.

When our first baby goat was born we invited our neighbors to look over the fence, and someone who was visiting them brought this half-crazed pittie over on a chain leash. It was going nuts trying to bite its owner to get off the leash and scared the spit out of our poor goat who was just learning to stand. I have nothing against pitties by the way, but if your dog acts like that on my land he’s going to find himself pushing up collards. I’ve always wondered why on earth you would drag your dog over to someone else’s property to see their animals.

I find that people who show up with poorly behaved dogs often claim it’s because their dogs love going places, or they have anxiety and it’s an emotional support animal, but the real reason is that the animal can’t be trusted in the house, and can’t be crated due to noise or self harm or some other issue. So these people drag untrained hyper dogs around with them to unreasonable places, with inappropriate supplies.
