Uncle Sam Expects You To Keep Hens and Raise Chickens !!

Pics
Uncle Sam might have been a fan of home chickens a hundred years ago but he passed away and Uncle Tyson and Big Brother are completely against it today.

"I'm Uncle Sam
That's who I am
I've been hidin' out
In a Rock and Roll Band..."

Not all taxes are `wasted'. At least, a certain special interest group's (cluck, cluck) pittance of an allocation seems well spent: http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov/

I think it would be Wonderful!! So many people depend on Their Neighbors to provide for Them.I told of My Neighbor They need to get and keep some Chickens .This was the reply"No those things are nasty"......But They love to eat Chicken and always want to"borrow a few eggs". Mine haven't started laying yet so I buy fresh eggs from a lady in the next county over. It won't be much longer My girls are almost 16 weeks old.

I got the message and now raise chickens and rabbits, grow a garden and operate an artisan bread bakery from my home (wholesale). Hopefully we could feed ourselves and a few more if need be.

I love this....

Does anyone have a 2014 or better yet 2015 version of this? I don't have the skills to make one :) This thread is AWESOME.

I just started chicken keeping, as in my peeps arrive in the mail next week. I have been taking self sufficiency one step at a time. I live in the border of residential and agricultural with a dairy farm backing up to the back of my half-acre property and nothing but homes with modest yards on my street. I'm in a county, not within the town or city borders but I am not completely sure I am "allowed" to have chickens because of my zoning. I ordered the new no crow collar to try out so I can keep a rooster. I recently had success with producing my own wild yeast starter from nothing but my well water and some flour. It is so exciting and liberating to try and succeed at these things! I'm a full time employed single mom homeowner so anything too time consuming doesn't work out well, but carefully planned projects are so much fun. I also have a wild black-cap raspberry patch that probably pisses off my neighbors :) Oh well. I'm a lawyer so I am very interested in the legality at the federal level issue...I may try to look into that since it appears no one has found anything. Although as another poster pointed out, city courts sometimes just don't care about legality or reasonableness. My zoning ordinance basically says anything not listed in the permitted uses is not permitted, but that the list of accessory uses is not all inclusive, and includes customary and reasonable uses secondary to the allowed primary use...now if that is not wide open for case by case decision-making I don't know what is. It isn't listed so it isn't allowed, unless we decide it is. I ordered one blue orpington hen, two australorp hens, three "rare breed grab bag surprise" hens, one barred rock rooster, one silver gray dorking hen and one silver gray dorking rooster... I realize that the two roosters may not work out (or either if it is going to be the line in the sand with my neighbors) but when I saw the dorkings available I had to add a pair to my order.

Sorry I went so off topic but this is my first post, I'm excited to join you!

:welcome

When it becomes obvious that one's forensic skills are lost to the cluttered minds of the `concerned', beating them with the "Blackstone" is, quite probably, less onerous & exercise is a good thing (best of luck, it can be a tough slog: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/37/local-chicken-laws-ordinances-and-how-to-change-them ).

The Poster: OK (use Download button for each shot (the `original' I worked from in 2010 - USDA) & the 2014 BYC. Dowloading should result in full file being available for further manipulation (all I do is torture this or that font to change out the year...)

Any problem, just post (photobucket is somewhat sketchy at times).

Though I have chickens and love to have them come running to me when I enter their yard, There's a better example of WHY to keep chickens...

My friends who have young children got chickens and its a joy to watch the interaction with the family as they tend and play in the garden. The chickens get in the act when people dig in the garden, practically begging to inspect each shovel full of dirt and the hole, looking for worms. The kids like to grab the worms and feed them to the chickens. The kids carry the chickens around and hold them in their laps. Guests, such as me, often find ourselves with a chicken in our laps too, whether offered by a child or chosen by a bird. They're always content on one's lap, sometimes enjoying stroking or just napping. It's fun to watch them pecking around or perching on yard ornaments - or the lawn mower. Fun to see, too, is when they make their way into the garage an perch on a tire or car motor. The kids seem to pester adults for attention much less, now that they have the birds to lavish their attention on, and are proud to show their pets to visitors. The neighbors seem to enjoy the chickens and the interactions with the kids.

No eggs yet, but I'm sure that will be a special surprise for the young'uns, I can hardly wait for them to learn that they can gather eggs for breakfast, then learn the various ways to cook them.
