Underground RR Quilt Block

Pics
Okay guys I hope these make sense

First you need to decide on your curve placement and size. The darker marker line is the sew line, but you will need 2 more cut lines (sew line plus seam allowance for each piece of the block)

So while it is still in one piece (I know this one is already cut, but it is what I had handy) make two identical patterns w/ the sew line and then 1/4 inch above and below the cut line for each of the two pieces. Remember you are ADDING seam allowance to each 1/2 of the block so for the round fat piece you will cut the top most line for the template, and for the skinny top piece you will cut the bottom most line. (which I have already done on this one don't let that confuse you)

Instead of using these as traditional templates use them as a square w/ them nestled what size square to they make, for this one I cut 3 3/4 inches. If I were making several I would cut a 3 3/4 strip and sub cut into the squares.

Stack both fabrics together and cut the width of strips you need

After they are sub-cut take the big fat one and mark the curve

Then you have this. You cannot use the edges of these two pieces as the sewing beginning they will not line up since the top side is cut bigger then needed.

Measure the 1/2 way point in the big lower portion and mark w/ pin

Measure the 1/2 way point in the skinny top section

Line up both section to center making sure the points are evenly lined.

Pin the 1/2 and the 1/4 points on the leading side of the sew line.

The big side is the top since we all want big tops, and the skinny side is on the bottom since we all want skinny bottoms.

Ease the sides together as you sew slowly around the entire sew line.

I usually mark / pin the next ones right on the machine while chain sewing

Your skinny tops will be to long and need to be cut that is normal.

Trim to the needed size, I over cut a little so I can trim to perfect size, so much easier then sewing to perfect size

Press the rounded side up

This is what happens if you try and sew w/o lining up the middle it will throw off your top piece.

I was looking for some WOW fabric and found some w/ butterflies, how perfect is that??? Not for this quilt, but for the autograph blocks some of us did a while back. I did find a butterfly fabric w/ neutral colors I really want to use for the sashing for this quilt. I couldn't get the fabric when I first saw it, wouldn't fit in the budget then, so really hoping it is still there when I go back for it.

Thanks for showing us your technique! Seeing it makes so much sense.

Kassaundra that is the way I do my DP blocks also, great tute job

I do hope you fabric is still there.
Katsdar, great that we have one more in the nest box, awaiting hatch time. How many are left?
This is the Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt so far, this is just show you the blocks, we are on week 3 right now. I have them all cut out and about half of each sewn, they are 2 to 21/2' squares. they are laying on the fabric I think I will use for the backing. The green grass like fabric is the edging fabric.
Bonnies color way used pink but I changed to purples.

Thanks, I was tempted by the BH mystery quilt too, but not a huge scrappy fan and I joined the 3 month boom swap instead, that looked more interesting to me, all different blocks. But I am following the BH thread on QB and FB
