There is absolutely nothing wrong with a nice flock of mix breed chickens. If that's what you like then by all means go for it. Variety is the spice of life after all

I absolutely agree. Different people have different goals and that is fine, and the way it should be. If we all had to stick to "approved birds," then the only thing there would be is red jungle fowl.

If I choose to lavish care on mixes, what is it to someone else? Why would it even be their business unless I go out of my way to make it so?

All in all, a chicken is a chicken, whether it is a Champion from a large show or someone's prized pet or a third person's livestock.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate the support

I think all kids of chickens are great... so interesting and so much variety and so many cool looks! But, I'm just a newbie so what do i know?

Yup, totally agree. If I could show mix breed chickens competitively then I would. I think they are great to have around. When they hatch they are just like a box of chocolates....you never know what color combinations or neat traits you're going to get

Don't feel bad about being new to chickens...they're not that complicated and you catch on fast when you have so many knowledgeable people like on thodboard to help you along the way.

There are no stupid questions....only stupid answers.

I agree that mis-representing a bird is inappropriate at best, and that is not what my comment was about. Didn't mean to offend you.

And I do understand about breeding for exhibition (which I do); but that is not everyone's cup of tea, and there is no reason it should be.

When all is said and done, some of my most special birds are based upon their personalities, not their show-worthiness. But I would never call them anything other than what they are. I have (and have had) araucana crosses, but I would never call them araucanas simply because their mother was one.

A few years ago a very, very pet quality silkie sold on eggbid for four figures. A reasonable price would have been $10. There are often naive people trying to purchase birds.
