Unsalted vs salted butter

My dad said that he and his siblings used to fight over who got to mix the little dye pack in the margarine bag.
I am old enough to remember that. We never used margarine, but a lot of our friends did.

Huh? I'm 67 and I have no idea what you mean?
Oleomargarine used to come in little plastic bags. It was white. It came with a little yellow dye pak that you broke into it. You squeezed the margarine in the bag to mix it. I am talking about the late 1940's or very early 1950's. I don't remember when margarine was packaged in cubes like butter because my family didn't use margarine, or oleo as it was often called.

I love this thread! One thing about unsalted butter that is interesting, it is supposedly fresher because salt is a preservative. At least, that’s what I’ve been told by folks who know far more about it than I do! 😊 I really think it’s a matter of preference though, and yes, I CAN Believe it’s Not Butter!! 😂

? Seems like if salt is a preservative the salted butter would be fresher. At least it would stay fresh longer?

Unsalted is good for baking bc you can control the salt in your recipe. Salted is better for serving bc unsalted has no flavor!
