This may be normal but I have to ask. My two roosters crow from about 5am to 7pm and that ok but every now and again one or the other will make a high pitched sound lasting about 5 seconds (for all the world like they are breaking wind), they also neigh like a horse at times (we don't have a horse, donkey etc) if I am working near their coop. I'm assuming it's a warning sound or a call to round up the flock but can someone please confirm.

Thanks in advance.

My Buff Brahma Roo Penrod makes that sound quite often, most times just as I've let the hens out to free-range, and he's left behind in his pen, all alone. His long, high-pitched wail will last up to 30 seconds. I think he's calling to the hens to return, that it's an ill-advised choice to leave the safety of the pen. Just guessing, though.

Lately, I've heard one of the hens make the same sound. There's no distinct context for it, though.

I have found the high pitched sound is associated with birds flying overhead so I guess it is a warning sound. I think they also make that warning sound occasionally to get the attention of the hens, too. I have found the neigh like sound is one sort of acknowledgment of your approach. Some of my rooster make more of a chuckle-like balk, balk when I come and go.

I think roosters are a great part of the chicken experience.

Mine also makes the high pitched sound for signaling danger. He also purrs, growls, clucks like a hen, murmurs and so many other different noices that I've been amazed. Roosters are pretty cool creatures!
