UPDATE 6/29: RIP Olivia. :-(

Yup. He said, "I saw things today that I never imagined existed, that I never thought to see, and that I hope to never see again."

Poor, poor Livvy. I just feel awful for her!!

He now says that he kinda wishes we'd just done it 3 weeks ago--but at the time she was acting sick and he thought (I agreed) that she needed to stabilize first. After all, the first time she had egg yolk peritonitis, 2.5 years ago, she recovered and went on to lay relatively normally (for her, that is--she has never been 100% normal in this area), so we both figured that she would stabilize and that hence, the surgery would be less risky later on.

COME ON LIVVY!!!!!

Amazing. My own Olivia (I'm sure you're read about her on that long thread) held on for ages and ages, through multiple drainings of fluid, but I knew that there were things inside her body that would be the end of her, similar to what your vet found in your girl. I think that if the hen is in exceptionally good health when the malfunction occurs, she fights back with a ferocity that is unparalleled in the animal kingdom. They are such amazing creatures. I'm pulling for your Olivia! I miss my girl still, months after her passing.

Yes, I did see your thread--I'm so sorry about your Olivia! It's part of what made me know for SURE that I wanted to do the spay to stop this in its tracks if we can. Olivia is only 6, so she has many good years ahead of her. I just hope she can hang in there long enough to let herself heal.

UPDATE:

Olivia is still with us. I didn't see her (vet wasn't there yet and the staff didn't want to upset Livvy b/c she's supposed to stay quiet), but I dropped off some breakfast (mealworms and chicken oatmeal) to try to tempt her to eat. Hopefully the vet will call me soon w/ more news.

UPDATE:

Just talked w/ the vet—she didn’t make it.

He said she was acting great this a.m.–eating and moving around. Just a few min ago she had a seizure and didn’t recover. It was all just too much for her. At least she was on strong pain meds today and feeling good up to the end.

Poor little Livvy. She was a very strong, tough chick for all her gentleness. Rest in peace pretty girl.

So sorry for you loss. We lost our dear Poachie on Sunday - she was a special needs baby from day 3 and made it to almost 12 weeks. Amazing how much they become a part of our family so quickly. Take solace in the fact that you did everything you could to give her the best life possible.
