Update: crop surgery with graphic photos

Pics
I've been following this thread, but not posting because I didn't have any advice to add to the already excellent help you have received.

I just wanted to join the chorus of those who applaud your courage in undertaking this procedure, and thanking you for documenting your situation so well.

I hope your hen makes a full recovery

Oh my gosh I have just read your story and WOW what a courageous person you are and congrats on the home surgery well done,
I also live in Canada in Southern Ontario. I'll check back and see how your little girl is doing
good luck and all the best to your family , oh and I seen in your photos you have a Chinese crested dog .. almost the same as mine. great dogs ours is named Millie

Pine shavings, especially the mini stuff, can cause crop impaction, too. There was a thread just last week here where shavings were the cause of impaction. That hen appeared to have a compulsion to eat them (pica) and I recommended psyllium (Metamusil) to try adding to her food as both a substitute and a preventative. Keep close watch on your hens if you suspect they are eating more than just a flake or two every so often and/or switch to larger flakes.

Not a JOKE, I can relate. Especially, if there's a mineral deficiency or LOW hemoglobin in an individual it can cause this disorder. I myself had a low Hemoglobin + Hematocrit and was addicted to VEGGIE STRAWS, They have no nutritional value. Every time my blood count was low I wanted nothing but Veggie Straws. It's now my ALERT that my blood count is low and I need IRON..

I forgot to mention... WOW, what a bunch of stuff in her crop!

How is she doing now? And where did you get all your fabulous supplies?

I bought a Surgical Instrument Kit for minor surgery from Sportsman's Guide (1-800-888-3066). The kit included hemostats (straight and curved), scissors, combination pen light and pen, scapel, scapel blades, probe, tweezers, 5-0 silk, and etc. I have included the phone number if anyone wants to order a catalog.

Another place to find these instruments is at a Gunshow. Find the military tables this is where the instruments are available.
