.that is usually the only notification that you will get til the chicks arrive and that will most likely come from the post office. Mine came earlier than expected on my first order and i was suprised when they (P.O.) called. But it was a pleasant surprise! LOL

How FUN!!! My Ideal chicks are also supposed to ship out on Wednesday!! I'm supposed to be getting Rhode Islands and Buff Orps in my order.

I just placed my order today from Ideal.

This is my first time ordering chicks and I am a little nervous about it. I have a small order and I bought the insurance to avoid the extra males. Hopefully it will all work out and they will all be fine.

I ordered all pullets:

2 black australorps

3 barred Plymouth Rocks

2 Buff Orpingtons

2 EE's

Now I need to finish getting the stuff I need like the light and feed and the waterer and such.

I did the same thing acountrychick did - small order (10 pullets), insurance, no males. Then I started getting nervous. Finally I freaked when I saw all the posts about boxes full of dead chicks, so I called Ideal and asked them to do anything they thought best to ensure the safe arrival of my 10 little pullets. They're going to put extra chicks in for warmth. I'm still nervous, but think I've done all I can do at this point...good luck to all for a safe delivery of healthy peeps.

I just got off of the phone with Ideal and unless there are shortages of any breeds - my chicks will ship on Wednesday to arrive on Friday AM. My order has been in since late Nov.-early Dec. so I hope there are no "shortages."

We will hopefully all have healthy, happy fluffy butts! Prayers for a safe journey for all.

Warmer weather this week, You guys should relax. Mine came in a couple of weeks ago when a lot of ppl. were having problems. I'm close to ideal and had no problem so i really think it was the extreme cold that caused a lot of the probs. Good Luck and Enjoy your fuzzybutts.

I've heard it's suposed to be quite nice this coming week, wich I'm glad..maybe I'll get some more nesting action from my duck girls, Rosilee has a nice nest of eggs going, and Lyra has started a nest as well, (thought I don't think ANY of her eggs will be fertile because she NEVER lets drakes breed her

, I can't wait to see the fluffy cuteness, I went and told Donte and the Naked necks(also Ideal babies..that are now nearly 5 months old) that they were getting baby sisters and a brother(we got ALL pullets and one roo) except for the guieneas wich are two straight run). I hope these new babies turn out as friendly as the older dudes, the NNs LOVE people to death, they follow you around like a dog.

My order from ideal is supposed to ship today too, I actually had trouble sleeping last night because I'm so excited. I'm splitting an order with another BYC member. I can't wait! I haven't heard anything from ideal so I hope they ship today!

does anybody get their chicks at local feed store?

Does anybody just purchase laying hens that are for sale locally?

The minimum at McMurray scared me off (25) but sounds like you are getting 10 from a place called "Ideal".

I was figuring 8- but do I have room for 10 in my 7 x 5 x6 coop with upstairs hen house (5 x 2 x 3 with two nesting boxes)?
Any suggestions, other than build bigger?
(with dogs and hawks and owls and coons, not sure if we will free range during the day)
