Hi all...I thought those of you who know my Little Lou might want to know how things are going for him. Well, he seems to have trouble with his one eye again, probably from still not dunking his head. He’s got two bowls of water...one shallow and heated, one tall for dunking, also heated. We use heat tape. I don’t think he uses either...his feathers are always so rough looking. So, I’m using the saline on the eye and teramyacin again. Hoping it helps. On extra warm days I put him out with the ducks for maybe an hour, so he feels like a big guy. He can never keep up, and I know he’s not happy. Most days he stays in the barn with the goats. They don’t go near him and he’s completely safe. We have 5 new little goat kids, and they are curious about him. He gets mean and breaks them when they try to say hi. I don’t want to leave him in the duck side all the time...it seems like that would be too much, everyday, for his whole life. I don’t pen up another duck with them because, quite frankly, they are mean to him. The goats are 10 times nicer! He doesn’t use his bad leg. He uses his wings to get around, and sometimes puts pressure on the bent back knee. The foot is all shriveled. I keep it wrapped so that, when he does put pressure on it, hopefully it takes some of the brunt. I feel helpless with my beloved Little Lou. Any ideas? Oh, I give him the vit b complex and kitten food. He’s pretty sick of both.
 
Sounds like what ever he did to his knee is permanent now. Having a handicapped animal can be rough, about all you can do is make him as comfortable as possible and safe. Since he most likely will get picked on. That’s great the goats accept him. I’d keep on with the b complex put it in his drinking bowl or bucket. If he doesn’t like the kitten food stop giving it too him. I thought maybe the extra protein would help for his feathers and muscle strength. Maybe once spring gets here at least he can be out enjoying the warmth. Does his injured leg have inflammation in it ? Hot swollen? You could try adding a baby aspirin for inflammation if it is.

It’s not hot or swollen anymore...it’s pretty shriveled from not using it. His feathers are just a wreck. He’s not at all my happy duck, and I worry that I’m doing the wrong thing for him. I do NOT want to ‘put him down’...but a farmer friend, said animals measure their lives in quality, not quantity. If that’s the case...what am I doing to him? I hate his poor daily routine, you know? In his pen...out of his pen. I just miss my duck

I buy him, well, everyone, the whole flock now. But, I always make sure that, he gets his own bag set aside..so Lous stuff never runs low. I give him treats too. :)
 
I know when my old Muscovy drake got where he could barely walk. Much older than Lou, I carried him from his house every morn to where he stayed during the day with his only female he had left. He still enjoyed life so I never even thought of ending it. All we can do is make them comfortable and make sure they aren’t suffering. And of course love them. Your doing great!:hugs
