Update on the sizzle chick.

Well, I'm not going to bed until something new happens! Period!

I say that now, but check back in a few hours!

I don't know if I can "hang in here" tonight...I'm really tired from last night! Plus, my mom and sister in Tennessee are coming tomorrow for a visit. I need a little rest, but I can't rest as long as this chick is behaving this way! lol

I counted hang last night, so I went to bed to try and get some rest. I just came up to check the eggs after being awakened by a very loud peep. The chick who pipped has zipped a LITTLE piece of the shell away, but is actually trying to push itself through the hole, instead of continuing to zip. It's breathing heavy, and I'm not sure if I should go ahead and help him and move him into the brooder or what? I just feel that this one is in distress.

What day are they on? He has been pipped a while and if he is breathing heavy I would be tempted to help him zip a little - the membrane may have dried out by now. It is so hard to say what to do without being there.

They're on day 22. The second egg that was bouncing around 2 days ago...I did remove it to check for life. The chick inside had died, and the yolk sac was still pretty large. Everything looked completely "normal" inside the egg...not too dry, not too wet, proper air sac. So I don't know. The chick who has pipped...I did go ahead and help it A LITTLE. I wrapped the egg in a warm moist towel when I removed it from the bator and chipped away a little more of the shell for it. But the chick still hasn't done much. I just don't think it has enough room inside that little egg to bust out! I think I'm going to help it a little more.

Wow, what an awesome learning experience this hatch has been! I'm VERY sad that it appears that I'll only have 1 little chick, but I'm thankful for the little guy! I did help him out of the shell. The membranes were pretty dry, even though I had raised the humidity to 69-70% last night (thanks to jimnjay's advice). The egg yolk was not present, or any signs of it. The chick had also had a bowel movement, or at least that's what that little greenish blob looks like to me. Right now, the chick seems very tired, moreso than what I would consider normal. It's peeping at me, or at my Delaware chicks who just want to know what's going on! lol I will update in a little while...I've got to go turn horses out and feed/water the other chickens and ducks. Be back soon.....
