So, my usually very vocal rooster "Fred" over the weekend started loosing his crow. It slowly started, and now he's barely sqeeking out any noise. Then last night, I was kinda hanging out in the coop after dark checking on some bitties we recently added to the big coop to make sure they were all good for overnight. And I thought I heard one of my chickens snooring! But when i paid closer attention it was Fred wheezing while he was breathing. I feel bad for the poor guy.

I bought some antibiotics from Tractor Supply over the weekend, and have been adding it to the water for a few days now. But, he's shown no improvement.

There is no sneezing, coughing, or any runny nose......yet.

I'm thinking I need to keep him away from our whole flock for a while to try and make it where if he does have an infection of some sort that my other birds don't get it, especially with just adding 20 new bitties to the bunch.

Please give ANY suggestions on what to do, I've saved this poor rooster after a dog attack last year, and he's been happy and healthy until now. And to be honest, he's acting fine...he's not limping or acting lathargic, just lost his crow.

Thanks!!!

Nicole

have you tried injectable antibiotics sometimes they pack a bigger punch.try tylan50 at 1/2cc for large bird 1/4 cc for small bird once a day for 5 days. that should do the trick. tylan is great for respiratory issues. hope this helps! with injectable antibiotics the dose is more concentrated. you SHOULD see improvement in a few days.best wishes!

yep in the the cattle and swine area but not to worry many poultry owners including myself use tylan. it packs a big punch against respiratory issues! my two favorites are tylan and baytril but baytril is hard to come by.

I was just going to ask about htat. I looked it up on tractor supply, and it said it was for cattle...haha...I'll have to give it a try.

Now, with respitory issues, is this contagious to my flock? Should I keep hi separate until his crow is back?

So, after some antibiotics in his water for about 5 days now, he's voice is coming back. I had started the antibiotics prior to posting on here...I was going to get te Tylan..but just yesterday I noticed I could hear him again :) Not 100% but getting there.

Thanks for all the tips! Now I know in the future I'll just start w/ the Tylan!!
