I am new to raising chickens and I also have a chick whom I think has cocci and I just read in my chicken health book that if you do use medication then you should stop the vitamins because that can feed the cocci. I don't know if that includes poly-vi-sol ? Does anyone know?

OK, the book I was reading was, The Chicken Health Handbook. It says if you are treating them with Amprolium, one of the ways it controls the cocci is by causing a vitamin deficiency, so give them vitamins after the treatment. I have no personal experience, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Oh my gosh --I agree with all of you on this forum . the ampollium dosage is giving me a masive headache between ml and kg and etc etc. My vet assistant had me weighing each chicken for goodness sake to figure out what each bird should get! this is crazy!! . All my new birds will be dead by the time we figure out the right dosage . I have been online all day without any real good answer. And yes I agree !! why doesn't the company just put a dosage in normal terms like oz to gallon etc for poultry on the labels that are understandable !!! How frustarting. I will now try to save my birds tonght with the latest entry of 9.5cc/ml to a gallon l of water for 7 days and hope that is right and follow it up with a brandy and coke---for me --not the chickens!! tee hee Thanks for all the help though. signed : a newbie to your forum I see these are old entries so Brahmadarma hope your birds are still alive !!

Out of curriosity... you folks that have survived coccidia outbreaks... are you chickens thriving after this? Are there some that are smaller? Do they make up the growth? Any of your chickens layers? Did they go on to lay ok?

A couple of drops per chicken should be enough, then repeat it in the morning.

It depends on whether damage was done to the walls of the intestinal tract/caeca due to the cocci population residing there. Most birds carry the protozoa, but in amounts that do not compromise the bird's health. Enteritis can be caused by protozoa, bacteria, intestinal worms, so a damaged intestinal tract means inhibited nutrient absorption, which means a compromised immune system. Growth can be stunted and have seen this myself. This is why it is important, and I prefer to use preventatives until birds are around 9 months of age.
