Urgent! Duckling Hit By Car

Well, they won't take muscovy ducks still. It's been nearly 5 years, so I figured it was worth a shot though. I've put it in large bin with a towel and water. I'll pick up feed and vitamins tonight or tomorrow. We needed oyster shell anyways.

In the meantime, is a bit of layer crumble a bad idea? It's all we've got at the moment.

Wow, sorry you happened upon this beautiful duckling.
I probably wouldn’t try to do much tonight. Poor baby is probably in shock. Do you have any Nutridrench? A little extra vitamin boost couldn’t hurt. Warmth around 80 or so should be fine, and I’d keep her mostly in darkness for a bit.
Best of luck. :fl

I want to tag a few others for their thoughts also.

I dont have any suggestions not already given.. :(
@GirlsMommy18
I hope he continues to recover and has no serious injuries ...:fl:fl:fl
You're doing great with him.. :love

Is there any chance you have a local vet who takes in injures wildlife?
This is a situation where google is your friend.

There’s one near me and I live in a “yeah, we don’t have that here, kind of town.”

I don't know much about ducks at all! So...hopefully @WVduckchick @Pyxis or @Miss Lydia will chime back in about food.
I don't know about layer crumble, if that's all you have, then it might be o.k. for a day(?)
Scramble or hard boiled egg would be good too.

Layer crumble is fine if that's all you've got. I'd suggest some flock raiser crumbles if you end up keeping him for a while, but layer for a bit isn't going to hurt.

(I actually recently read about a vet that specifically recommends layer feed for ducks -- not just laying ones, but ducklings and drakes too. Not sure how much I agree, but at least someone thinks its not only ok, but preferred) :idunno

Human vitamin B complex tablets can be halved and 1/4 to 1/2 of one crushed into food once a day to provide all B vitamins including niacin. Cheap enough, and you can take it or give it to your chickens. Layer feed is fine for any bird once or twice, if that is all you have. Chick starter and flock raiser are about equal in nutrients, and both would be good to use.

Well that's definitely interesting. I wonder why they prefer it? I'll plan on picking up a small bag of flock raiser still, but it would be interesting to know. Do ducks need higher calcium maybe?

Can an adult duck eat layer feed?

Adult female duck of laying age can. At one time that little ducklings mama or grandparents or even daddy were probably someone's pet and flew off to become feral. when keeping Muscovy they have to have their wings clipped to prevent this from happening and becoming a nuisance { not my idea} but it seems many feel that way. I have Muscovy and because I know my ducks love to fly I keep them home by clipping their wing. Not only do I not want to be part of the problem that a lot of places are having but I truly love my birds and don't want to lose any. That is how I started with Muscovy someone let out 3 in the river below us actually 4 but one was killed before I decided to adopt.

I've never heard that ducks need higher calcium, but ya know, there are a million different ideas on what they need. But I'll try to find the post again (it was on a FB group, so taken with a grain of salt, huh? lol) to see if there is any backup info.

These were wild, correct?? Have you seen the momma again? Any possibility of getting the duckling back to her?
