One of our chickens went missing last night, we looked everywhere and thought that was it, today we found her and she looks like this…

I’am absolutely devastated… what is this? Am I going to have to cull her? I really do not want too and haven’t stopped crying

Is this a prolapse?

Her comb is lovely and bright red and still standing

Hi, I don't know where you are located but here in the middle of the US it is about 4 a.m. so I'm not sure I can find anyone to help you right now. But I will tag a couple of our Educators and see what they have to say. Here on my phone that does not look like a prolapse but it's really hard to see. It looks to me more like a dog or other predator got hold of her and began to eat her, starting at the vent, but somehow she got away. So here I am tagging @Eggcessive, @azygous, @coach723 and @Wyorp Rock.

I can tell you to start by treating her for shock. Mix up some sugar water, 1 tsp sugar to 8 oz water, plus a pinch of salt and a pinch of baking soda. Stir to dissolve and hold some up to her beak in a small cup to drink. If she won't drink, put a drop on your finger and put it on the crease of her beak for her to swallow. Repeat until she refuses by shaking her head. In the morning offer her some of her regular food, moistened with water till it is kind of soupy like oatmeal.

Before you try to take better photos, fix a tub of warm water with a dash of dish soap, if you have Epsom salts, add some to the soak, and soak her bottom side for about ten or fifteen minutes.

Gently pat her dry, and take more photos.

How old is this hen? Is she actively laying?

Thank you, I have bathed her in Epson Salts and cleaned up as best as I can. Since the photo I have applied some iodine to the area and kept it dry

I’am unsure whether I should attempt to push this back in now? I have some raw Honey also if this would be any help..

She is actively laying and is only 9 months old

Thank you. Being so young, she has a good chance of recovering from this. Do you have any calcium supplements on hand? The kind women take to make their bones strong? If not, if you have Tums, that can work. Pop a pill directly into her beak. She will not choke. If you need to run to the store, assuming you're in the US and not south Asia, buy this.

The calcium will stimulate contractions to expel what is blocking her and cause prolapse, if that is what this is. We still need her butt cleaned up and new photos so we can better assess her condition.

The cloaca contains the openings for the intestines and the oviduct. Is she able to pass any droppings? I hope that she recovers, but keep her separated and away from flies while she heals.

I have pushed it back in, She is passing droppings but everytime she does so it is popping back out.

I have used raw honey and am keeping the area from drying out, she is inside in a crate in a dimmed room with some electrolyte water and corn food
