US citizens do you know you you lack a very basic right?

exactly my reason for starting this thread... whether Canadian, American, European.... whatever, no one should be able to legislate what I can and can not put into my face, my families face.... in my home and property.... if it isn't harmng anyone else!

Funny, I didn't know this started just in the last two years...

Come on Rabbit everyone knows that this country was perfect during 2000-2008. It's only gone to heck since the last administration took over. It will be so much better when the right people run this place. Only problem is who is the right person? Maybe Grizzly Momma can do it right.

Hey trunkman. Be sure to let me know when they outlaw chickens and guns. Let me know when you find the right person too. Sounds like you have someone in mind.

There's a case for legislation that prevents us from doing something stupid that might, for example, harm ourselves or our families. That might include badly grown food or dangerous substances or objects in the home. However, what we may get is legislation that limits individuals inappropriately and misses the target. Sometimes its just bad legislation drawn up by people who don't understand the subject matter and at other times it amounts to no more than a ring fence to protect an industry by making it very difficult for new entrants to enter a market.

After WWII in the UK food was very short and so was money to buy it. For, I think, something like eight years after 1945 food was rationed and the government provided free school milk in an attempt to improve children's diets. During the war, families were encouraged to grow as much of their own food as possible. That continued and the wartime generation for decades after often turned over their gardens to growing fruit and vegetables and keeping chickens. Some rented allotments if they had no land of their own. I didn't hear of salmonella in those days - not until factory farms and supermarkets appeared on the scene. It makes just as much sense to do grow some of our own now as it did then.

I agree, if I'm not infringing on anybody else, leave me alone.

We are not allowed to handle Fireworks without taking a firework course. Too many idiots firing them at each other.
That I believe comes down to common sense, no course on correct firework handling is going to make somebody use common sense.

Some areas farmers are allowed to sell eggs at Farmer's Markets, some areas they are not.....for different reasons that don't make any sense...

Our freedom to choose has been taken away from us when it comes to Veterinary care. Apparently we cannot be trusted enough to be able to choose alternative health care for our animals but it is not against the law to smoke, drink or use drugs while you are pregnant.

Actually it is against the law to drink or use drugs while pregnant. When you go to a hospital to have a baby they check your blood. If it has dangerous narcotics or alcohol then social services takes the baby. You have to go through classes and rehabilitation to get the baby back. Used to be a foster parent and have picked up many babies at the hospital for that reason. Smoking is legal and it causes low birth weight. The worst thing you can do is drink. It causes the most damage, much more than heroin or cocaine.

When it comes to actual rights of the individual citizen I tend to be Libertarian. When it comes to regulating business I am Liberal all the way. Small farmers should bear responsibility if they sell tainted food. If you're raising food for yourself then it's nobody's business. Same goes for smokeables.

Not entirely accurate IMO... many things, booze, cigs, salmonella laced chicken they figure so long as you stick a label on it then it's the person's own fault (not their campaign contributor's) if it makes them sick or kills them.

That is a catch 22...

With SOME things... raw milk for instance, I would agree to this... likewise for labelling store milk that has been laced with chemicals/hormones.

But with other things... guns for instance... I do believe that some folks (children, convicted felons) shouldn't be allowed to tote them anywhere they please because they are a threat to others... on purpose or accident either way THEM having access to that weapon puts me and mine at risk...

I figure (like many others) that your rights end when they step on mine. But, it's a fine line and unfortunately it seems that very few politicians agree with that sentiment.

Yikes, Palin scares me only a little less than Bush.

You probably already know how long I think this has been going on - 149 years.

Ultimately I figured this thread would turn political, too bad. Next it will get locked.

Just watched Food Inc again, this time on TV, no conspiracy, just a outright take over.
As for the big companies taking responsibility for tainted food, just barely.
It seems they have all their people in the right places.
From what I have been reading you can't blame any one administration on any one ruling.
Bush, Clinton (both sides) Rumsfield, and Arnie Swartz. etc. plus other US politicians I never heard of, all had their extended fingers in the decisions. It's like a big complicated game.
