Hi all, I'm on a SUPER tight budget, I mean like, the hardware cloth is going to be difficult to save for tight, LOL. Anyway, my house has some old interior doors in the garage ceiling (along with lots of 1X4's and such. I'm wondering if I could use those doors, hollow though they be, to roof my coop if I put roofing on them (tar paper, trim and asphalt shingles)? I wouldn't try using them for the floors... but maybe a wall??? Bad idea? Is it easy for animals to tear into? we have rats, mice, opossums and the worst of the worst, raccoons.

Seems a shame to not use such big flat "boards" LOL

I would use them. Also might wanna put some thought into insulating them, Drill a few holes and fill them, that will help on heating and cooling as well.

Oh, good, I'm glad there is no obvious error in the idea :D I was thinking that the space itself could add a bit of insulation :) We really don't need help with keeping warm here as it rarely gets below 40 degrees (sometimes we do get a frost, though) it's more heat I have to worry about. They'll be under a giant tree's shade and have lots of ventilation.

I'm supposed to be doing "spring cleaning" in this house, but the outdoors keep calling me! I keep going out to garden instead of cleaning, LOL. Now I'm itching to pull all that lumber and doors etc... down so I can get started but I mustn't

I really should check out CL more often.... wonder why I don't go there?...... Oh ya, I remember why

Too many habits to break! LOL

I think I've come up with an interesting design! wondering if I should wait until I get back in September to build.... Ugh!

As long as you keep them dry. The biggest problem I can think of is holding nails for shingles or tar paper on the roof. The skin of a hollow core door is only 1/8" thick. Try to nail along the edges of the door where there is a 2"X2" frame.

Yea if you wait you will find all the materials you need. . . .on CL. . . .but also ask neighbors and friends if they have any old piles of wood they want to get rid of. . . . usually people have "extras" from projects they just can't waste . . . so the store it. Or there is a demolision going on (I got all my plywood 20 sheets - from a burnt building that was boarded up. . . so as they work on rebuilding the structure. . . I get the ply taken off) . . .and just let everyone know you are on a scavenger hunt. . .and make a list. And people always have that old jar of screws or nails? that have been sitting for years. . . decades? ? ? ?

and be creative with what becomes available.

Ask roofer friends if they have left over materials?

There are piles of materials just being stored or rotting away all around you. . . you just have to find the piles. ;)

Good Luck on your scavenger hunt!

Oh, yah, you're right!.... I can screw the doors on the wood, but I didn't think of shingles! Hummmm...

LOL, Crazy Mitch, unfortunately my friends, family and neighbors know me too well to give me anything (to pile up in the house) LOL. I'm doing a HUGE clean up this summer, big scrub down of the house and ejecting all the junk I'll probably never use! My garage is full, and it's time to purge, but until I finish, I'm afraid nobody will believe me, ROFL But yes, you're quite right.

Well you have all the materials you need right at your house! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ALREADY! ! ! ! You have to rethink things! So start with - - - a welder and weld it all together to make your coop. . . or glue and nail it all together in a box shape! And you can have a coop with 3 foot thick walls! ! ! ! hehehehe . . . Pictures please. You can paper mache' all your papers together for thick walls and then paint them with that left over paint for the walls. . . screw anything plastic together for windows. . . pretend they are stained glass! . . . . .

PICTURES. . . . please. . .. hehehehe

Crazy Mitch!

LOL, I keep changing the design! So many good ideas on this site alone, I'm driving myself nuts! Pictures probably won't happen for a bit. If my current eggs aren't developing, I'll have to wait until I get back from my trip and try again. But definitely, when I get it figured out and finished, I will take lots of pictures ;)
