USPS Damaged My Incubator!!!!! (PICS)Updated 7/13/09

It's the PO's fault. We do not pay exorbitant wages to these people to abuse our goods we have to ship. We do not pay them to shake boxes that are marked eggs just to see if they rattle, or if they really are eggs in there. I dragged Martha, my wonderful postal delivery person in here today and showed her the pic. She said even if it were done by a postal machine and not the human handler, the person in charge of that machine is required to report the damage, it is to be tagged damaged at PO, and recompense is to be made if the damage was not due to poor packaging. She said that looks like the original box it would have been mailed in, and yes that box is fine to mail it in again. So it should not have been damaged, and since it was responsibility should have been taken and it wasn't.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!

I recently well about 4 months ago ordered some contact lenses through the mail. The package came, here's what made me mad I have a oversized mailbox for packages, instead of putting my contacts in the mailbox they laid them on the ground a good six feet from my front gate. I didn't even see them until late at night when I went out to get in my truck and almost ran them over. They had put them in a zip lock bag because it was raining that day, yay! NOT. Why not use that thing called a mailbox.
Anyway I know just how you feel. I almost ran over $200!!

I feel........... you paid for a service. If the box was in decent condition but your item inside was broken it would be your fault for not getting insurance on a more fragile item and there was reasonable care at delivery. When you send an item and it looks like it was ran over by a truck by the time it gets to you........... it's there fault. You paid to have a package that was in it's original shipping box sent to you. It is a service just like any other company offers a service, they are expected to take reasonable care. They obviously did not. I never understood why you have to pay more to have reasonable care on an item that should be treated as, and you are paying for already. If it were a glass vase in a packed box it would be different....... the risk of even with reasonable care would be there for breakage so insurance would be needed.

Update: I got this email today:

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We are, however, not legally authorized to compensate for loss or damage of uninsured items.

I will be happy to document this problem. In order to do this, I will need some additional information so this can be sent to the correct office and you can be contacted.

My responce:
Let me start by saying this, I am extremely angry about this situation, however, I know you had nothing to do with it so my dissatisfaction is not directed at you. As far as insurance goes: I understand the need for it but I don't think that applies to this case, Heres why. This is not a case where a box was left on my steps while I wasn't at home and the box got rained on, or my dog chewed it up, or a case where a glass bowl was shipped in nothing but news paper. This is a case of a box that was damaged extremely bad while in the care of the USPS. The box is approximately 22 inches square. It had an eleven inch gash/tear along the front of the box. If the damage was as simple as a torn flap or wet box or a slightly crushed corner, that would be different. I was told by yourself as well as the postmaster that since I didn't get insurance, that their is nothing I can do. So are you telling me that the USPS can horribly damage a package that I paid to have shipped, and there is nothing I can do. I feel like that when I pay for a service such as shipping, that I should be able to expect to receive the contents of said package in a usable condition.
I don't mean this in a disrespectful way, but if I can't get any better answer than" there is nothing we can do" I would like to know who I can call that is in charge of customer service or a regional supervisor or the like. I am willing to go as high up the "ladder" as I have to. Again I don't want you to think that I'm being a pain, but this is completely unacceptable.

I don't want to document this problem. I would like it corrected!!! That is just the same as saying there is nothing we can do, but we will document that we damaged the crap out of your package.

I'm so sorry. Did the box have a sticker that said "We are sorry we may have damaged your package. Sorry for the inconvenience."
I can't stand when they obliterate a package and send it back with that sticker. We MAY have damaged your package.

Good luck,

ETA: I never recommend the USPS for shipping packages. I always try to get UPS or FedEx or something.
There have been many times when the USPS just comes and chucks the package by the door. Not set it on the porch, but throw it.

Latest info:
Postmaster called me and told me to make a complaint through USPS.com. Did that, they told me they would let my local PO know about my complaint. I ALREADY DID THAT! PO called and gave me a 1 800 number to call. I may be wrong but I think I'm getting cornswaggled here! I will go to the Postermaster General if I have to!!
