Hi everyone. I'm glad to see others from Utah on here. We are new to chickens and have a backyard coop with a buff orpington, gold sex link, ameraucana and barred rock. I have enjoyed reading and learning much fromreadin on this forum.

Welcome! [IMG] What area are you located in? I'm in West Valley. We've got chicken buddies scattered all over the state - and even in some neighboring states! It's quite fun. Don't be shy, we love chatting.

You are so awesome Hattie! I am so not surprised that you spent time talking chickens with him. It sounds just like you. Isn't it amazing how having something in common with a person can remove barriers and allow us to spend time with someone that we might not have before?
I belong to a Vokswagen club and one of the reasons I love it is because of the variety of people that I get to associate with. It doesn't matter who you are or what your job is because everyone in the club shares a love for a funny looking little old car. Whenever I drive my little beetle anywhere I find that people will wave and smile at me or come up to me at the gas station to tell me about the bug that they drove in college or the bus that their parents used to haul their kids around in. Driving that car makes the world a little bit of a friendlier place to live. [IMG]
Hmmmmm........ I wonder what would happen if I drove around with a chicken in the car........

    Hi Newtochickensut!

[IMG] Wow, that's a couple of new folks on here. Yep, need to know where you are. I need some more people down my way. I'm in Spanish Fork.
Now, pictures of your chickens would be fun to see. Sounds like you have a nice little flock. Are they laying yet? If so, bet you get a lot of eggs from that red sex link. :))

Thanks for the welcome! I am in Lehi. I think my hens may have coccidiosis so I am starting them on Corid today. I hope It helps them. Thanks for all of the input and I look forward to learning more.

Nope [IMG] Hope it clears up quickly for the girls!

So I got a better look yesterday at the little BR with the funny leg. Turns out it isn't his leg that's having problems. It's one entire half of his body that's larger than the other. It makes his neck constantly lean to one side, and when you look at him from above, he's very obviously deformed. Not sure what we'll do with him when he's older. I guess that depends on if he has any kind of trouble getting around and eating. For now, he'll be staying with us. He's a crybaby, but a cute little guy.

So kind of a funny picture from earlier today.

    "Hey, can we come in?"

The turkeys keep trying to follow us into the house, then pace and wonder where we've gone when we close the door. Sorry for the dirty window - doggy noses [IMG]

Red, such a cute pic :) What is up with the deformed BR? So sad huh. I do not think I would get eggs from the chicken house plus again.....bad luck, bad hatch, cracked eggs, the ee eggs were all pretty much white or off white except for the mustard-y ones, and someone posted about antibiotics making them yellow. Hope the little guys makes it, or is not miserable. Maybe he will have to be dinner.....is the hen looking ok? Funny out of all those 36 eggs to get one BR hen, all the rest are boys---2 BR, 1 EE, then the JG that birdguy has, not sure if that was male or female. 5 chicks. Sheesh!

I noticed you did not answer Birdguy's post lol ( unless I missed it haha) Does this mean no more tries to get a girl turkey? I almost got a pair from him, was thinking I could even just grow them over the summer then sell them. To see what they are like.

Weird I have a strange thing going on in my coop. I have 11 laying currently. No more looking ready just yet....a few more weeks I think. The FBCM i got at chickenstock May 5 as a little chick is closest, she is squatting and been red for a while (17 weeks only, so early?!) she will be next.....BUT the wierd part is all 11 laid yesterday, then this morning at 7 am I went out and there were three broken softish shelled eggs (but enough shell to have color).. on the coop floor. 1 white, and 2 bluish greenish. I have no ameraucanas due to lay.....hmmmm....and the only ones that could lay white are the Polish. They do not look ready yet at all. I cannot figure out what happened. Could not be the FBCM, hers would be dark. I also have two "Marans crossed with ameraucanas"....that "should" lay dark brown or olive, they are getting a little closer ....probably 19 - 20 weeks...but it could not be them, they are not red yet and the eggs are not the right color for them. They should not lay until after the younger FBCM that is red lays... I have a few other ameraucanas that are not even slightly pink....still way too young.....a mystery. It is driving me crazy. I want to put my sleeping bag out there and camp out with them so I can figure it out :D

Lisa, sounds like you've got a mystery on your hands, for sure! I wouldn't be surprised if someone that's supposed to lay dark eggs is laying the light-colored ones. My Cuckoo Marans is supposed to have dark, speckled eggs, but the only dark egg I've ever gotten from her was that fart egg a while back. The rest have always been a light, creamy pink-brown, sometimes with speckles.

Yep, I am sorely tempted to get more turkeys from Shawn, but I'm at my limit right now of how many birds I can afford to feed and keep housed with enough space. I'm not going out to Tooele right now, either, so I can't transport them out to my boyfriend's place. However, it is something I will keep in mind for future reference.................hear me, Shawn?.................
