Sundance, I'd wondered if it was your incubator, too, after the Legbars. I'm glad to hear that that's not the issue.

Finally got a second egg from the BSL

She laid in the same spot as the RIR. I wish they wouldn't make me complain before they lay eggs.

Hey guys,
I'm back I had a wonderful time seeing Sasha and seeing her wonderful place. She has the sweetest family and I loved hearing about the history of her home. How neat to live there. Such a beautiful little town too. I loved it. Thanks Sasha for the tour.
I have bad news though. My sweet Gertie died today.

My chickens were all making noises and so I went out to see and there she was laying there dead. She had had an egg today and I had seen her earlier and she was fine. In examining her she looks to have a prolapsed vent. Could she die that quickly? She has been fine ever since I got home. I don't understand. I'm just so sad I didn't even know to help her because I didn't know anything was wrong.

I am sooo sorry, I know how you feel. Yes she could die quickly from a prol;apsed vent, She could have prolapsed and thrown a clot or gone into shock. Hope it was quick

The Saga goes on. We had dinner and a little nap. I went outside to check food and water only to discover the naughty chickens were using the nice level ground for a bath tub, We had holes. I grabbed the hose to chase them off. just as I was squirting hubby yelled at me don't squirt there!!! then he saw the holes. He was not a happy man. So i grabbed some bread lured most of them in the coop with a run and shut the door. They were not happy as they have been free ranging in the yard all summer but we really did not need their help, it was hard enough with the dogs surpervising didn't need the chickens help as well So the pavers were put down on our leveled area now it was time to move the floor from where we built it to the pavers. Big problem we lifted it on end and could not move it,, so here we are with this 10x10 floor on end just looking at each other. I left Ed holding the floor and I went to get a neighbor to help, My victim was 2 houses down in the street talking to his brother, WOW 2 strong men to help. They moved that floor in short order, so tomorrow we have to nail the floor down to floor frame and put the vinyl on it. Then we need to frame the walls.

Today we got up early and nailed the floorboards to the frame, made sure it was all square and level then it started to sprinkle. We covered the wood floor with a tarp and off we went to buy glue to put the vinyl on the floor. It finally cleared up enough that we thought we could put the floor down before we had dinner. We took the vinyl out rolled it out and rerolled to put the glue down. The clouds started getting darker. We started spackling the glue and the thunder started. I told hubby must go faster faster faster. Then the lighting started. Mist go faster faster. just as we were rolling the last bit of vinyl on the floor it started to rain. Hard, No time to put tarp back on. Ed grabbed the tools we were using. I was worried about the wind so I staued out in the pouring rain to put bricks on the corners. Before I got to the house I was indeed soaked to the bone. This coop is going to be a project to remember. Tomorrow the walls go up. We were rained out today.

Oh Gosh, sorry for your loss - RIP Gertie! I really liked her when I met her and she seemed like a sweet heart chicken.

Oh Hattie, I'm so sorry. She probably didn't suffer for long, if she went that quickly. So sorry. Many hugs to you.

Sundance, you guys are having quite the ordeal in getting that coop built. I wondered if you were okay with all of the rain and lightning. My day got hijacked. I meant to call you

Made a trip out to Tooele today and brought my BO home. I tried to grab the EE roo and put him in the run so that he wouldn't take off before I can get a new lady friend for him, but the twerp gave me the royal slip. I hope he's okay. The BO seems shy, but ok thus far. I checked her for bugs and found mites around her vent, so she got a canola bath tonight. She didn't particularly like it, but she was a good girl about letting me grease her up. Hopefully that will take care of her itchies. I just hope she doesn't get depressed for missing the rooster. They've gotten quite close since the other girls disappeared. I still feel like scum for separating them. I just can't deal with possibly losing another of my chickens right now.

As soon as I can get my computer figured out, I think I'll put that black Amer cockerel on KSL. I've had it with him bullying the other birds, big or small. The only one he doesn't pick on is my RIR, probably because she can be a lot meaner than him. Grrrrr.

Hey, got a question for anyone that has dealt with broodies. Aside from Silkies and Legbars, have you ever heard of other breeds of chicken going broody before they even lay? My Wyandotte sisters have been acting funny. They're hanging out in the bushes and don't much care to be with the rest of the group lately. And, the larger of the two, Stevie, used to be a bit of a bully. She just doesn't seem to care what the other birds are doing now, even when there's a feeding frenzy going on. I checked the bushes for nests, but I hope she's not getting sick

The RIR is still laying, but she's laying one egg every two days. I haven't seen anything else from the BSL. No one else looks or acts ready to lay. What is going on? Sigh.......
Yes or right after, my Rosecomb hen is brooding right now and so is my young little silkie. These are the last broodies for the year unless I bring them in my garage.

Hattie I'm so sorry. What a beautiful girl she was. Love the top. Not much you could have done sweet lady. It sounds like she went quick for you not knowing anything was wrong.

I'm with sundance on that hot weather messing with our hatches. I just had 5 more NN's hatch. Two that went into lock down didn't make it..one was a double yolk, and they dont' usually make it..the baby was very small, and died, then, who knows why the other did. Sundance..I have a dark blue that is looking like a girl..she is huge. Come to find out, some of these were Jersey giant dads. There is a red NN, but looks boyish. A red reg..not NN that looks girlish..:/ Then there's the black NN, I am thinking girlish. So, I have several of the whites from the last hatch that look girly, but these new ones have less feathering than the last ones. Will take pictures tomorrow. I could be wrong on color, as a few are still fluffing up.

Hattie, I hope your babies are looking girlish. I think I have two girls and one boy. They are still so small, but very active in that grow out pen. They love it.

My lonely blue is looking girly..yaaay..that is the only olive egg that made it. Very pretty blue.

Lisa, that Lavender splash is looking more and more girly. Pretty cute.

Anyone that wants a baby that will grow up to be a great egg layer, these reg. chicks are going to be great egg layers. One came from a light cream color, one came from a darker creme color. The black girl has a fluffy neck like an EE, but not the puffy cheeks. Interesting.
I have the few NN's picked out that I want. So, there are a few left. :)
