Yep, that's a hatchery difference on the BLRWs. The hatcheries will sometimes just cross a silver and a gold Wyandotte to come out with a kind of BLRW, but even the ones who are breeding from semi-established lines are not going for anything close to the desired standard. They want quantity, not quality, and it tends to show rather stongly in the BLRWs. The picture you have there has a nice shade of blue on the head, but the rest of the chick barely even looks like a splash. You never know with BLRWs until they are actually mostly grown, but i think it's a fair bet you'll see a big difference between that one and the others.

Of course, even with breeder quality you can come out with some less desirable ones. I've got one roo I had to separate out because he has a retarded comb--it can't seem to decide what shape it wants to be. Besides, he's just freaking ugly all around. Looks like he tried to be blue laced, then changed his mind halfway through and went for black. Yeesh. Not pretty. And one of my splash hens appears to have forgotten some of her lacing. They aren't for the breeding pen, I'm afraid.

Casa I have 1 more doe to kid in the middle of March. She is not real big so I am expecting twins....I managed to sale one yesterday so I am down to 15 bottle babies. I have 2 going on friday. Then just 7 more have to go. The rest can stay for awhile.

I am loving all the chick pics....So hard not to run out and get more, even though I have eggs in the incubator.
Aww Cynthia, that big fat Marans egg hatched! That baby is awesome. I still really wondered if two would come out lol! And NO wishing more roosters on me, I had my share last year, I am trying to spare myself this season

I love your chicks from Red's eggs, they are just so cute!

Red, I love mush too, we all adore you

Good luck with your broody and eggs! And so glad you did not crash!!.

Donna, glad all is well at Fort Chicken. Glad no more theft! Sounds like you have all the roosters this year, he he, and noisy ones to boot. Glad you figured out that dark egg, but bummed your Isbar is not what you thought.

Blu, so glad the little gal is doing well! They are such a cute bunch. Are you done "hatching" goats yet or do you have more on the way? You have been a busy busy girl!

Madchicken, your little broody is so cute. Good luck with yours too, hope you can get some cute little babies!

Sphinx, you have some serious self control not to hatch. Esp with those sex link eggs! That is awesome!

Joybells, glad Shirlee is laying again. She looks happy as a clam in your shower! I agree with Gary, everybody needs a house chicken

Preferably one that does not crow.

Donna put it well, I'm sure thinking your hatched babies look better!

Hey Donna, have you seen an egg from that Swedish Flower Hen? How is she? Is she being a stinker for you too? I find they usually settle down after they start laying, and come around better. Not sure how many chickens you have close to home, or at home..:) I would love to see the egg she is laying..when she does. I have a chance of getting one back from a friend, it has a nice top on it, but I decide to take back a cinnamon sussex instead. It's getting ready to lay, or it is, she isn't sure which new girl is laying. Oh well, hoping you are enjoying your Swedish. Wonder what kind of chicks she would have crossed with one of your beautiful, crowing, roosters.

Sundance, did you get that cast of your baby? How is that leg looking? I hope it is well as the vet thought it would be.

I have 8 EE's hatched. 7 are doing well. Not sure if one is going to make it. The most strange thing. When I candled to go into lock down, this egg had NO air sac to speak of. I could see blood vessels and clots all through the bottom. I could see the chick moving around in there, a lot! I kept turning the egg in different positions to see the air sac. None! I just went ahead, put it in lock down because I knew it had no air sac. I put a question mark on it.

Well, I decide last night that I would pip it, since so many had already hatched, and there were pips everywhere. When I did, all of this bloody gooy thick stuff was right there, where the air sac should have been, and it started oozing out..sorry, pretty yucky I know. But I've never had this..anyone else?
I went ahead and stated removing more shell from the bottom part. I thought I could hear chirping coming from in there..I thought no way, this chick is dead. How could it possibly chirp in all of this thick stuff? I went to move more shell, and the shell just crumbled in my hand. I thought, oh well, I'll just remove the chick from it all, wanted to see what I was missing out on, because there is a certain color of EE I was looking forward too. I could hear chirping..for sure! I hurried and lifted the neck out of the thick goop. It started to breath, that not so good of breaths. I thought I would just put it in the bator to absorb the yolk. It's still alive. It's moved a bit every time I checked it, but it moved more when I picked it up to clean it a bit. I put a wet paper towel on it's bottom so the yolk would stay moist enough to absorb.
I just went and checked it again. That baby is moving and chirping, and most of the yolk is absorbed! It hasn't opened it's eyes on it's own, but it is moving around. I will now start some electrolytes and hope this baby makes it, and that it is a girl.

Here are some of my new chicks. I am very confused about the big difference between the BLRWs that I hatched and the one that I picked up from Sunny Brook Farm. Is this a hatchery difference?

Looks like the wellies are watching a tennis match

Did you know how had a Marans life was? I had no idea. Also, photo shoots...exhausting!

Cynthia, Yes I would love some I will PM you.

It does take a bit to get those photos sometimes, but they look like they made it all right, slept through it at the end. lol. These are nice photos!

Love the Swedish! She and my Andalusian are now best buds and appear to be watching out for Gimpy. They are all in with 8 hens total and she seems to be getting on fine with all of them. I don't have an egg from her yet, but most of my girls aren't laying yet--I'm getting an egg every couple of days or so and that's all. :(

Wow, I am sending positive thoughts...I am amazed that it didn't drown in there. I hope it is a girl and stays strong.

Thanks blu..she opened her eyes a bit for a few seconds, and now she is trying to stay upright. She is crispy from all of that stuff. Will have to give her a bath when she is strong enough.

Cynidloo and Cynthia, your chicks are gorgeous! I hope the little non-aircell baby does ok. I have never seen that before either, so weird, huh!

Blu you deserve a medal for all that bottle feeding. Mama of the year lol! 15 on bottles? I can barely handle getting my granddaughter's bottle feeding done each day. And chasing the preschoolers around.

Cyndiloo, what ratio of blue/black did you get in the marans, were there lots more of one color? All these eggs from DMRippy are dark, I was thinking maybe I would keep a blue if I get one to hatch. I had always thought the black laid darker, but these are all about the same. I sure hope mine hatch! I have had some bator issues this time, with the sun coming out off and on like it has been, my house temps are fluctuating like crazy.
