Utah!

Sundance...I am so glad you are home and doing better.....Hope you improve quickly now.
I finally have a moment at the computer without little fingers trying to help. so glad you are doing better Sundance, wish i could say the same probably lost my job due to a medication change that went bad, but my girls have kept me out of the hospital. my son got me chicks for mothers day,

does any one have any ideas on how to start a breeding program in a neighborhood that doesn't allow roosters?
Not sure exactly what you had in mind with a "breeding program".....I know a few people with female rabbits that will take the female to visit a male to get bred....It might be possible to do the same with a hen in order to get fertile eggs....Just depends on how picky you are about what breed you want or if you are just wanting a mix of chicks?

I agree with blujems.... think that would be the only way you could get your hens bred. But you'd have to be super hyper-vigilant about lice, bacteria and viruses

.

Maybe you could find a breeder looking for the breed of hens you have, and then have them give you back some fertile eggs for hatching. Or, someone may just let you bring your hens over for a couple days to visit their rooster

. However moving the hens back and forth may be traumatic for some, and make them susceptible to illness or pecking order damage, or an illness unknown at the rooster's home.

My sympathies about the problems with your meds

. Just recently I suffered the same thing and really had a bad time of things

. After being on meds for many years that the doctors determined I HAD to be on for my improved health, after going through chemo, I had a bad enough reaction to just make it too difficult to continue on them, at any cost. Surprisingly, I'm doing great and am glad I took control of my life

. Wishing you luck and hope your employer is sympathetic (maybe your doc can give your a letter to your boss explaining the situation more.... GOOD LUCK! and stay positive!!)

Thanks for the input, my boss is willing to work with me, it's my lead that wont, or cant mental illness just doesn't register to some people. at least my best source of therapy is my girls and they don't care especially if i remember to bring melon rinds

Rykel, I have a healthy roo at Wheeler you can breed with if you want. He's a Buff Brahma. I've had requests for other people to do that. I've never had problems with him.

Still no pipping. Meh, I've accepted that I got a 10% hatch but will wait...

Cassandra, bummer about your eggs! Hope you get a stray late one :)

Rykel, sorry to hear your coworkers are being stinkers. Hope you are able to stay! I wonder if you kept a rooster, and put it in a kennel in your garage at night until after sunrise that the noise level would be acceptable to your neighbors? Red puts her roos away at night, to be a sweetie to her neighbors...I am thinking if mine starts making a racket I would try that first before selling him. So far he is really quiet.

Up next, quail eggs! Due to hatch tomorrow or Wed. They look good! 22/24 developed, and 20 are in lockdown. Only drawback is I put them in the forced air to hatch. Backwards I know, but I am not putting my SG eggs in the forced air this time, no way am I taking any chances, not even for a couple of days, and the forced air has not been my friend this year, the temp jumps around a bit. So hopefully the quail eggs will do ok in there, lots of humidity, crossing fingers I can keep it up there until hatch. I set the temp just a tad low in case it spikes so I hope all goes well! Sweating this one out! Argh!

I have a darker partridge NN turken for sale...and 2 EE's, partridgey coloring....all sexed females from McMurray. They are 3+ weeks old if anyone is looking for bigger female chicks. I can post pics if anyone is interested. $5 ea.

Sundance, hope you are feeling well today! You too Blujems! If only the sun would come out, that would improve moods across the board. I miss the sunshine!

I so agree with the sunshine as being a mood lifter..we all know it's true. Soon we will be saying, wish that 60 degree weather was back. ~ Nah ~

Lisa, you are going to have popcorn popping out soon. They are like little pop corn kernels popping when they are in the brooder, jumping away from you when you try to catch them...so cute.

Bad news--something got into the Isbar coop I have in the garage last night. I had 18 7 week old Isbars out there and whatever it was killed 9 of them. Bunch of blood going from the nesting area down the board that goes down to the run and soaked into the bedding at the bottom. Most of the birds look like they might have been shaken to death. Several of them have leg wounds. Whatever it was left 7 alive and okay and 2 more alive but looking damaged/traumatized. We think it might have been the little obnoxious yappy mutt our neighbors have that keeps getting loose from them and chasing our cats. It was in our yard again yesterday trying to chase my 6 year old and could easily have seen the birds in the garage before our neighbor caught it. There were a couple of dents in the hardware cloth near the door, all the dead chicks piled in one corner. The only way it could have gotten in is by lifting the lid on the nesting box, which it could pretty easily have done (that's been corrected now). What a mess.

Daloorashens-- I don't think it is a good time to take more chicks, unfortunately, se we will pass on the SFH this time. :(

I'm so very sorry to hear you lost so many chicks. That's my biggest fear living up here by American Fork Canyon is that something is going to get my chicks. I have them fully enclosed in a run with their coop right now, but once they are free ranging, I'm very nervous something is going to get them. They will be fully locked up at night, but I'm still nervous something is going to break in. I hope your neighbor keeps their naughty dog in their yard.

A breeding program without roos sounds kind of difficult, lol... would have to be kind of paranoid about disease and such, unless all your birds originated from the same place...

corvidea... oh man, so sorry about your isbars!! That is SAD!!

I need to write birdguy again about grabbing the legbar cockerel... he's not going to the stewpot, Sphinx has spoken for him, lol...

SFH= Swedish Flower Hens really pretty birds with mille fleur type feathering in all diffferent colors, good layers of large cream eggs, some have crests, some do not.. They are a landrace bird from Sweden (go figure)

Going to post here and then put up an ad on KSL... my blue wheaten Ameracauna roo is for sale ($10 for anyone on here, will be $15 on KSL), if anyone wants him... time to make room for my birds for next year, and the Ameracaunas got booted!!

It was stupid of me to think they were pretty safe in the garage and overlook that nesting box lid. :( I live right in downtown Bountiful, so there aren't tons of predators here other than the usual dogs and cats and the occasional racoon. The cats would have heisted a bird or two and I'd have found feathers everywhere. The only local thing I know of that would kill them and leave them uneated is a dog. Can't go accusing the neighbor's dog with no proof--it would just cause hard feelings and I'm not actually supposed to have this many birds here (they are going up to the land when they are old enough).

The nesting box is secure now and we are keeping the garage door shut, which sucks since I wanted to have fresh air and light in there. We'll have to move up the timing to get the birds up to the land, I expect. Once the birds are where they are supposed to be, if I catch that **** dog in the yard again, I'm going to punt it into the next century.
