what kind of quail?

Hello everyone! I wanted to pop by and say hello and ask a couple of questions...I know, I only pop up sporadically and it's always because I need help.
hmm.png
First, the other day one of my girls had a bare, bloody patch on her back, just in front of her tail. It's healing up nicely and no more problems, I'm assuming it was a...readjustment in the pecking order. Should I be worried or should I just go with my gut feeling and call it good? I'd been gone all morning so I didn't hear anything happening.

My second question is about leaving my girls for four nights. We live in West Jordan and I have someone who can come over once a day to care for my animals. Is it safe to leave their coop open for those four nights or should I find someone who can come twice a day to let them out/in? I haven't seen any sign of predators in my yard, but I know there are cats and dogs in my neighborhood, and all four of my girls go right in and settle down as soon as the sun starts going down. What do you think? What do you all do when you go on vacation? I'm tempted to splurge on the electric door, but I'm not sure my husband is going to go for that since vacations can be costly.

I got my e-mail from Ideal asking that we send something to the P.O. Dear Cynthia

The United States Postal Service is proposing a "Special Handling Fee" for poultry orders sent through the mail-stream. This fee would add $9.00 to shipments of 10 pounds or less and $11.95 for shipments over 10 pounds, increasing your total purchase price significantly. While they propose an increase, they do not outline how the funds will be used to improve the service they provide, nor does it offer how additional funds would address their concerns about; Protection of Postal Service employees, mail and the environment, or animals against death.

aravis..I leave my run open sometimes. If you haven't had any problems, I bet they would be fine.. Just leave a lot..a lot of water here there and everywhere..it's going to warm up here. Go ahead and leave some other type of chicken food for them too. Have fun, where ever you are going!

My broody little mama hen. My Faverolle. She fluffs all up, but she doesn't peck me, just growls at me. :)

She has a run all to herself. It will be fun to watch a mama hen and babies again.

twice a day is best. Better safe than sorry and cats / dogs on chickens can be devastating

Added three chickens and moved a few chickens today.

Mozart and Lilifey (Buff Brahmas) are now in with the aggressive Fiesta (Easter Egger) for crossbreed production. Fiesta was once again added to my pens. I always find it hard to feed or water him because of his aggression.

Zaphod (Buff Brahma) and Dynamite (Blue Sizzle), both being alone, were dealt with... Wheeler Farm offered me a few of their chickens. They had a nice Light Brahma, she went in with Zaphod, haven't named her yet, but she's tamer than I thought she would be.

With Dynamite are now two Silkie hens. One is white, she's very nervous. The other is alot smaller, a Splash, she surprised me too, she's not afraid of me at all. Neither have names.

I'm gonna try and get some eggs from the Brahma breeder in California. I want full size Buffs really bad.

Gonna try hatching again in a couple weeks. All of them this time, though, unless I can find that breeder that was mentioned to me, will all be cross breeds. Of which I can only keep one... Darn you, 8-chicken limit! D:

Also... I think I have a guess at the genders of my chicks. One is growing feathers faster. I know that Brahma males take forever to feather out, but we'll see, lol...

So, that's it then. Threw out 16 dead eggs. None even made an effort to pip. I think they were already dead before my other two were ready. The remaining two might be moving, but I really doubt it. I'm betting all I have that them 'moving' is just me moving the egg.

I almost wanna buy chicks to make myself feel better, but that's a bad idea. Sorry for being a downer.

Don't get discouraged!!! Hatching is definitely an emotional roller coaster sometimes, especially with shipped eggs, that can be downright depressing!

Sorry, I have some light Brahmas in right now. Just put them in. If they hatch well, you will maybe want a couple? I also have a few Delawares that will go into lock down this week. I have some mixes that will possibly have NN's in them if you like those. Going to have BLRW eggs coming soon..and some more Favorelle eggs to replace the ones that didn't work. Free, and more free ones that didn't work. RIR's. Guess I'm busy for a while. If they work this time. The Brahma eggs are looking good already. Oh, I also have Rhode Island Whites in. Wow, I am going to be busy.
It seems I remember a certain someone saying they were done with hatching last fall?? Lol, that's funny... I love those light brahmas, too, their colors are so striking!

Does anyone have a chick they are willing to part with? We hatched out a lone little cream Legbar boy a couple of days ago and I really don't want to buy a chick at the feed store after the last mess I saw there.
Oh, poor little thing! I have several right now, but I'm sure I'm too far away to be able to help you much...

Wow, I knew they were small, I didn't know they were THAT small!! and CUTE!!

Okay... one more thing I am going to sell which I am posting here and on the ID thread first, then they will go on craigslist and KSL...

I have a pair of American White Bresse, they are a breeding pair, they are not related. They are both about 5 months old, the roo just started crowing and the pullet is POL, comb is getting pinker all the time. If you have not heard of them, they are a French meat bird, apparently kind of a delicacy. I would love to work with them, but I do not have the space to free-range them to grow them out and then finish them on corn like the French do to make them tasty, tasty lol... Anyone on BYC I will sell the pair for $40, on KSL I will ask $50. PM me if you are interested. I will post pics tonite when I can get to my home computer...

Oh, and Lisa, the SFH are not sexed, they are straight run... Joybells chose the ones she wants, so there are 3 still available.. I am asking $10 to help cover shipping costs, since I can't seem to get the dang things to hatch from shipped eggs, sheesh!

Also had my last hatch of EE and OE chicks for this year this weekend, will give you a great deal on those chicks if you want some of those cuties
wink.png
there's a couple of F2 olive eggers and bantam easter eggers in the group, too... along with a Marans cross chick which should be a black sex link pullet, don't want to say for sure, but they should be sex linked...
